The Buffalo Bills made headlines Wednesday morning when Head Coach Sean McDermott announced Nathan Peterman will start at quarterback against the Chargers.
Speaking to the media ahead of Sunday's game, McDermott explained he feels the rookie gives the team the best chance to improve, and described what he's seen from him this season so far.
"He's a young man that as a rookie, is very mature," McDermott said. "He's worked extremely hard since the day he (came) in the door just like he did in college. He's progressed every day since OTAs, training camp, all season and the small sample of game experience he had the other night."
Speaking of quarterbacks, the Bills are also preparing for the possibility that Philip Rivers does not suit up for the Chargers given he is in the concussion protocol. If Rivers can't go, Kellen Clemens will get the start for the Bolts.
"We'll be prepared for both. Obviously with Philip's streak of 185 straight starts, we anticipate him playing. But at the same time, we have to do our due diligence to make sure we prepare for either quarterback."
The Bolts and Bills are both on two-game skids, but come Sunday, something will have to give. Overall, McDermott has been impressed with the Chargers despite their record.
"I see an offense that's well-coached. Coach (Ken) Whisenhunt does a nice job and Coach (Anthony) Lynn. Obviously with Philip and the cast of (players) they have at the receiver position (and) the tight end position, (and) obviously the running back position, it's a very talented group…. (The defense) is a talented group. They were banged up last year I felt like. They've added Tre Boston this year and they have a talented group of players."
As for the defense, opposing quarterbacks have been weary of the fearsome twosome known as Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. McDermott knows he must make sure his fifth-round pick QB is ready to go.
"(Bosa and Ingram are) tough to prepare any quarterback for, or any offense, really. They've got a talented group. I know them and the roster fairly well. Obviously they've had success this year affecting the quarterback and sacking the quarterback. It'll be a big challenge for us."
