Welcome to Part 2 of our 2024 positional recaps, a series that will run through the next few weeks and highlight 11 Chargers position groups. We'll focus on key stats, memorable moments and look to what lies ahead in 2025.
The Chargers entered the 2024 season with a new-look roster, and the running back room was one of that saw the most change.
All four running backs who logged an offensive snap for the Bolts were not on the team last season, and neither was running backs coach Kiel McDonald, but the group all made their mark throughout the season.
But the one standout among the group was J.K. Dobbins, who finished quite the comeback story in his first season with the Chargers.
Dobbins, one of the many players brought on a 1-year deal, bounced back in a massive way from two season-ending injuries to his knee and Achilles in recent years.
He shouldered the burden in the backfield for most of the season and often gave the Chargers the boost they needed with explosive run plays.
It was one of the more remarkable comeback stories of the 2024 season.
"The injuries he's come back [from], you talk about Achillies, you talk about a knee, multiple surgeries," Chargers Head Coach Harbaugh said back in November. "That's difficult for any position, let alone running back.
"To our eye it's even better, faster, quicker, stronger than before he had those injuries," he added. "Then you think about the grueling rehab that went into that … a lesser man could not have done it."
Dobbins was brought in during the offseason from Baltimore, just like his teammate Gus Edwards, with whom he reunited with in Los Angeles.
Edwards went through a difficult season after joining the Bolts in free agency, as he battled through injuries at multiple points of the season including a stint on Injured Reserve in the first half of the year.
However, he closed it out strong with 127 rush yards and three touchdowns in his final three regular season games.
The games that either Dobbins or Edwards missed was a chance for others like sixth-round pick Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins to step in.
Vidal saw action in 10 games during his debut season, even scoring a receiving touchdown in his first extended action in Week 6.
Meanwhile, Haskins also played a crucial role in the backfield after being claimed off waivers before the season, scoring the first two rushing and first receiving touchdowns of his career.
Notable Number
Dobbins hit a notable mark in his first season in the powder blue.
The 25-year-old hit 1,000 yards from scrimmage for the first time in his career in 2024, as he finished with 1,058 total yards.
Despite only playing 13 games, Dobbins still finished ranked inside the top 10 in rushing yards (905) and rushing touchdowns (nine) in the AFC.
"I wanted to get 1,000 rushing yards but I got 1,000 scrimmage yards in 13 games," Dobbins said. "I'm proud of that but I'm not satisfied."
Memorable Moment
There were a number of moments that were big from each of the running backs who saw action this year — Edwards' and Haskins' big plays to help seal a Week 16 against the Broncos, Vidal's first NFL touch being a score in Week 6.
But the No. 1 goes to Dobbins, who stamped his resurgent season with a signature moment in primetime.
With the game tied at 27 with 26 second left in regulation in Week 11 against the Bengals, the Chargers lined up for what was seemingly a run to make it an even closer field goal attempt.
Dobbins, however, took matters into his own hands.
The running back took the carry and weaved his way through the Bengals defense before finding the endzone for the go-ahead touchdown.
In hindsight, that win went a long way in the Chargers eventually stamping an AFC playoff berth.
But it also signaled another defining moment in Dobbins' comeback season from major injuries.

1 Question for 2025
What does the Chargers running back room look like next season?
As it stands, the team heads into the offseason with Edwards, Vidal, Haskins and Patterson (Futures deal) under contract at the position in 2025.
The big question for the room heading into the offseason lies with Dobbins, who is slated to be one of 30 free agents.
Dobbins saw the bulk of the action this season in the backfield, so it will be something to watch during the offseason.
The veteran running back expressed a desire to return but added he'll wait and see how things play out.
"I love it here," Dobbins said. "The Bolt Fam welcomes me with open arms when people counted me out.
"I would love to be here," Dobbins added. "Only God could say what happens in the future, but I would love to be here."
It remains to be seen how it all shakes out in this position group heading into the offseason, but it is something Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz and Harbaugh said last week they are working on for all impending free agents.
"Those are the things we're discussing right now. we're engaged in conversations with guys on the roster and the impending free agents, which is a number of them, so we're talking with all of them," Hortiz said in his season-ending press conference. "We'll continue to discuss that among our staff and come up with a game plan."
Harbaugh added: "Hopefully we can come as close as ever been done to having Version 2.0 be with as many of the guys on our current roster."
