5 Takeaways: Harbaugh Proud of Win as Focus Turns to Roster Decisions

5 Takes P3

The Bolts wrapped up preseason play Saturday in Dallas with a 26-19 win.

Next up? Roster decisions and an eye on Week 1 against the Raiders.

Here are five takeaways from the Chargers preseason finale:

1. A win, and a big week ahead

The Bolts ended the preseason on a winning note, something Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said was a focus before the real dance starts in two weeks.

And with the Chargers initial 53-man roster due Tuesday by 1 p.m. (PT), he was proud of how players stayed focused with so much on the line.

"It was exciting. I thought our guys did a great job," Harbaugh said. "Just a lot on people's minds at this time of the year, third preseason game, everybody playing for something individually and for their unit, their team.

"I just wanted to see guys clear their minds, cleanse their souls, just going out, playing free, playing fast, putting their best foot forward," Harbaugh added. "I thought our guys really did that. I thought it was that way both sides of the ball. It was good football."

The Chargers — and all NFL teams — must trim their rosters to 53 players by early Tuesday afternoon.

But Harbaugh made sure to note that given the expanded practice squad sizes — the Bolts can carry up to 17 players with their International Pathway Program exemption — meaning Harbaugh views the squad more around 70 players.

"The best players. The best 53 that we can," Harbaugh said. "It's so different since when I was last in the league because it's really not a 53 anymore."

"I'm happy that it's grown," Harbaugh later added. "There's a ton of guys in that locker room we want to be a part of that 70-man roster."

Harbaugh also said he's excited to watch Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz work his magic over the next few days.

"Joe Hortiz, he's going to run it," Harbaugh said. "I want him to do it because he's watching everybody, not only on our team but every other team."

"I'm going to play Robin to his Batman," Harbaugh later added. "We trust Joe, he's the best in the business."

2. Davis, Fehoko look electric

The Chargers first play of the game wasn't supposed to be that end around to Derius Davis.

It's a good thing it was, as the Bolts speedy receiver took the rock and motored 70 yards to the end zone for an electric opening play from scrimmage.

"Funny story, that play was supposed to get called on the fourth play of the game," Davis said. "I told [quarterbacks coach] Shane [Day], let's make it the first play of the game. Called my shot and just hit it."

Davis also gave a shoutout to rookie Brenden Rice for his block down the left sideline to spring the score.

"Once I knew I got around [a linebacker], I saw Brenden making a good block on the sideline, took a dude to the sideline," Davis said. "Credit to Brenden for making that block. I was able to cut back and score."

Harbaugh said he had a great vantage point from his spot on the sideline.

"The way he worked the sideline was incredible," Harbaugh said. "The lesser man would not have scored on that play or stayed inbounds. It would have been a four, five yard gain.

"I was right there, my vantage point was right on top of it. I didn't think he would be able to get it turned," Harbaugh added. "But he did, incredible job of working the sideline by him. Really seeing his speed was great to see as well."

Big plays are nothing new for Davis, who led the NFL in punt return average (16.0 yards) as a rookie in 2023.

"For sure, that's what I'm here for," Davis said. "I told the team I was going to be a spark, so that's what I want to be for the team."

The Bolts also struck big early in the second quarter when Easton Stick hit Simi Fehoko on a go ball for a 78-yard score.

"This whole week we've been working that," Fehoko said. "It was a good week of practice with Stick and then Justin [Herbert] coming back.

"It gives us a lot of confidence as receivers to go out there and play well," Fehoko added.

Fehoko did not play in the second half, instead watching in sweats as he awaits to see whether or not he makes the initial 53-man roster on Tuesday.

"I just wanted to go out there and put my best on," Fehoko said. "It was awesome to have my wife and son in the stands, just super awesome."

3. Colson makes his debut

Rookie linebacker Junior Colson made his preseason debut Saturday after not playing in the first two exhibition games.

Colson, a 2024 third-round pick, got the start at linebacker and played the first few series on defense. He also lined up on special teams.

"It felt great, for real," Colson said. "It felt great, got me out there, got my feet wet.

"I was just out there having fun. I want to keep going," Colson added. "It's a lot of fun, my first NFL game, I think it went really well. I'm excited for the season."

Harbaugh noted that the Bolts had Colson on a "pitch count" in his first action.

Colson underwent an appendectomy before training camp and has worked himself back in recent weeks, flashing in practice once he got into full-team drills.

"I feel great. It's out of me now, I don't have an appendix anymore so there's nothing you can say about that," Colson said. "I feel great, I feel 100 percent."

Harbaugh added: "I think he's been chomping at the bit ... looking forward to watching the tape, thought he did a good job. Really good job."

While Denzel Perryman and Daiyan Henley are expected to start at linebacker for the Bolts, keep an eye on Colson's role in his rookie season.

"I'll be ready for Week 1," Colson said. "I'm ready for Week 0 if there was a Week 0. Just excited to go out there and play ball."

4. Jefferson balls out

Have a day, Tony Jefferson.

The veteran safety was anywhere and everywhere Saturday against the Cowboys.

Jefferson, who didn't play last week against the Rams, registered 14 total tackles to go along with two interceptions, a forced fumble and a sack.

"I talked to the defense last night and said, from a safety perspective, that this was a game for us to be active and get after it," Jefferson said. "I missed last week — had a hamstring — and just felt healthy and got back in a groove.

"I had the juice flowing all week and just tried to carry over to the game," Jefferson added.

Harbaugh said Jefferson's game was one to remember.

"Tony Jefferson, that was a sensational game. A sack, forced fumble, two interceptions, [14] tackles," Harbaugh said. "I've always had great respect for him, admiration for him and he played for my brother [in Baltimore].

"Family, that's family. Great to see him do so well tonight," Harbaugh added.

Jefferson will now wait and see how roster cutdown day shakes out Tuesday, but said he feels "rejuvenated" after not playing last year. Jefferson worked in Baltimore's scouting department in 2023.

"It took me a second to get rolling and back into it from a physical standpoint," Jefferson said. "I've finally hit my stride and the trainers did a good job of taking care of me last week. I was able to go out there and fly around today."

Jefferson's three forced turnovers were part of a six-takeaway day for the Bolts defense.

Robert Kennedy, Matt Hankins and Tre'Mon Morris-Brash all recorded interceptions, with the latter tallying a pick 6 that gave the Bolts a late cushion in the fourth quarter.

5. Kicking game on point

No surprise here, but the Bolts wrapped up preseason play with another strong effort in the kicking game.

JK Scott had a masterful game as he averaged 50 yards per punt — with a long of 58 — on six kicks.

One of Scott's best punts came in the first half when he uncorked a 57-yarder before Jaylen Johnson made a textbook tackle for no gain on the return.

Scott also had a 43-yard punt that didn't generate a return with Cornelius Johnson forcing a fair catch.

Scott helped flip the field in the fourth quarter, too,

He had a 41-yard punt that was fair caught at the Dallas 8-yard line and later followed up with a 45-yard punt that was fair caught at the Dallas 10.

Cameron Dicker was also solid with a pair of field goals from 21 and 48 yards out.

Dicker made all six of his in preseason play — with a long of 58 — and was nearly lights out in training camp.
