5 Things to Know About New Chargers Safeties Coach Adam Fuller

FullerNew

The Chargers announced Tuesday that they have added Adam Fuller to Jim Harbaugh's coaching staff.

Fuller will be the safeties coach and work with defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale.

Chris O'Leary, who was the Chargers safeties coach in 2024, recently took a job as Western Michigan's defensive coordinator.

Here are five things to know about Fuller:

1. Former Florida State DC

Fuller comes to the Chargers after most recently serving as Florida State's defensive coordinator.

Fuller was with the Seminoles from 2020 to 2024, including Florida State's stellar 2023 season in which they went 13-1 and were among the nation's best teams.

Fuller helped the Seminoles be one of college football's best defenses in 2022 and 2023. Florida State ranked 21st in points allowed per game (20.6) in 2022 before jumping to 18th the following season at 19.3 points per game.

2. Fuller's 1st NFL job

This will be Fuller's first time coaching in the NFL.

But he should be plenty familiar with team captain Derwin James, Jr. — an alpha on the Chargers defense — as James played at Florida State a few years before Fuller arrived.

James earned Second-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors this past season for his remarkable play.

Fuller will also be tasked with coaching Alohi Gilman, who has started 35 games over the past two seasons.

Some of Fuller's position room is yet to be determined as Elijah Molden, Tony Jefferson and Marcus Maye are all scheduled to be free agents this offseason.

3. Other NFL connections

Fuller coached numerous players in college who are now in the NFL.

That group includes Asante Samuel, Jr., who was a second-round pick by the Chargers in 2021.

Fuller also oversaw the growth and development of Jared Verse and Braden Fiske, a pair of 2024 draft picks who were finalists for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

4. Other college stops

Fuller has 20-plus years of coaching experience at the college level.

Before joining Florida State, Fuller spent six seasons at Marshall in a variety of roles including defensive coordinator, safeties coach and assistant head coach.

Fuller also spent six seasons at Wagner and three seasons at Richmond in the beginning of his coaching career.

Fuller was also the head coach at Assumption College, a Division II school located in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Fuller is one of multiple coaches on Harbaugh's staff that has previously been a head coach, a group that also includes Rick Minter and Marc Trestman.

5. Starred at Sacred Heart

Fuller played linebacker for four seasons at Sacred Heart University from 1994 to 1997.

He earned All-America honors in 1996 and was a team captain in 1997.
