Undrafted rookie running back Detrez Newsome, wide receiver Geremy Davis and defensive end Chris Landrum shared their journey to the Chargers' 53-man roster on a bonus episode of the Backstage: Chargers Podcast presented by Toyota.
Highlights from the conversation with Davis are below:
On cutdown day
"I woke up kind of early, like 7:30 (a.m.) and I couldn't go back to sleep and I was like 'Man, I've got to wait all the way til 1 o'clock.' So, I literally just sat in my room and watched "The Office" the whole time, 'til 1 o'clock. That's all I did and I didn't want anybody to call me because I didn't want to panic (if) I looked at my phone or anything. But, the Lord showing me favor – I didn't get a phone call and now I'm happy I can focus on the Kansas City Chiefs."
On entering every NFL season battling for a roster spot
"It's, in a way, frustrating, but like I said my faith has grown so much more this year (and) my confidence has grown a lot more and I've gained more relationships with the guys in the receivers room here; just that we're all of service to each other. (We're) instilling confidence in each other, in everything that we do and you want to stay around that. And wanting to stay around that, you have to perform well so you can make sure you're still here around those guys and I was happy with the room that we had and the outcome I had in my preseason to allow me to make plays like that."
His approach towards the final preseason game at San Francisco
"A lot of guys can start early and focus on Kansas City probably (around) like that third preseason game. (But) each game, I'm like, 'Alright, this is my Week 1.' I'm in here studying film, studying DBs, studying the second- (and) third-string guys because those are the guys that I have to play against. And like a lot of times, or -- all the time in that fourth preseason game -- the starters aren't playing, so I'm like, 'Man, this is essentially like, my Chiefs.'"
