Although they haven't been on the same team since 2005, whenever Philip Rivers and Drew Brees share the field, it's special.
ESPN's Eric Williams discussed how Thursday’s Chargers-Saints joint practice was like taking a trip down memory lane for the pair of QBs. In addition, he also shared a note on how the two coach their sons' flag football teams and even organized a special "game" last season during the bye week.
"Drew and I have kept up over the years, so it's not like we haven't been in touch," Rivers said. "It was good to see him and share a practice field with him again. It's been a long time. And it was good to work against that Saints' defense and get some different looks, just like we did with the Rams."
With Brees spending his offseason in Del Mar, California, just north of San Diego, the two veteran quarterbacks still bump into each other. And that included putting together a scrimmage between the flag-football teams of Gunner, Rivers' oldest son, and Brees' son Bowen, as ESPN NFL Nation Saints reporter Mike Triplett detailed here.
"I think we both had a bye week at the same time, and we said let's just get together and scrimmage," Brees said about the two flag-football teams playing.
Added Rivers: "We literally set up an intersquad flag football game between our two teams, just in a local park. Had referees come out, set up the field, and there was Drew and I out there coaching our boys against our teams. I just felt that was kind of cool. It was one of those moments where I allowed myself to kind of go, 'This is pretty crazy.' Two guys who have played for, shoot, combined 30 years, 100,000 yards and all that -- with Drew leading the way on all those things. It was a cool moment."
