Chargers Can't Hold Late Lead in Primetime Loss to Cardinals

Game Recap W7

The Chargers fell just short Monday night with a 17-15 loss to Arizona.

Here is a game recap from Week 7.

First Quarter

Justin Herbert, Rashawn Slater, Bradley Bozeman, Khalil Mack, Denzel Perryman and JK Scott were the Chargers captains. The Bolts won the toss and elected to defer. The Bolts started on defense and had to end up making a pair of stops on defense. Teair Tart intercepted Kyler Murray but fumbled on the return as Arizona got a fresh set of downs after the recovery. Khalil Mack then chased Murray around on third down to force a throwaway and a Cardinals punt. The Bolts offense started at its own 12-yard line and efficiently moved down the field into Arizona territory. The Chargers hit a big pass play to Jalen Reagor but he fumbled the ball out of the back of the end zone for a touchback as Arizona started at its own 20. The Cardinals moved past midfield but the Bolts defense held strong and forced another punt. The Bolts began at their own 10 and picked up a pair of first downs. Herbert hit Will Dissly for 18 yards on a screen pass to move the chains again. The teams were scoreless at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter

The Chargers drive stalled at the Arizona 41 but it didn't matter for Cameron Dicker, who tied a team record with 59-yard field goal to give the Bolts an early 3-0 lead.

Arizona responded with a 79-yard scoring drive as the Bolts fell behind 7-3 with 5 minutes and 40 seconds left in the second quarter. The Chargers offense went three-and-out on the ensuing possession and punted the ball back to Arizona. The Bolts defense forced a Cardinals punt before the Chargers offense got rolling late in the quarter. Joshua Palmer hauled in back-to-back massive catches to get the Bolts to midfield.

The Chargers got in field goal range for Dicker, who hit a 50-yarder on the final play of the half. The Bolts trailed 7-6 at the break.

Third Quarter

The Bolts got the ground game going early to start the second half with three straight runs to get to midfield. But a handful of miscues in Arizona territory pushed the offense out of field goal range before JK Scott pinned the Cardinals down at the 7. The Bolts were hurt by a defensive pass interference call on third down to keep Arizona's ensuing drive alive. But the Chargers defense came up clutch as the unit stuffed back-to-back quarterback sneaks to force a key turnover on downs. The Bolts moved the chains on the next drive as Simi Fehoko had a juggling catch for a gain of 25 before Herbert found J.K Dobbins on another pass to move the sticks and get into the red zone for the first time in the game. The drive stalled out at the 10-yard line but Dicker's 28-yard field goal gave the Chargers a 9-7 lead late in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

The Bolts fell behind early in the quarter as Murray scrambled for a 44-yard touchdown run. The Chargers responded with a 31-yard pass play to Stone Smartt to get into Cardinals territory. But the Bolts settled for Dicker's fourth field goal of the night — this one from 47 yards out — to cut the deficit to 14-12. The Chargers defense forced another punt but Arizona's punt was downed at the 1-yard line. Herbert worked his magic through the air as he connected multiple times with Dissly and McConkey to get into Cardinals territory. The Bolts faced fourth-and-1 at the 30 and went for it as Hassan Haskins picked up two yards on the ground. The Chargers couldn't get into the red zone but Dicker's fifth field goal of the game, a 40-yarder, gave the Chargers a 15-14 lead with 1:54 to go. The Bolts couldn't hold the late lead, however, as Arizona kicked a last-second field goal for a 17-15 Chargers loss. The Bolts are now 3-3 and are at home against the Saints in Week 8.
