Bolts Fall to Seahawks in Preseason Opener

Recap Preseason 1

The Chargers opened exhibition play Saturday night against Seattle at SoFi Stadium.

Here is a game recap from Week 1 of the preseason:

First Quarter

Easton Stick, AJ Finley, Jaret Patterson and Scott Matlock were the Chargers captains. The Bolts opened the game with a 43-yard kickoff return from Jaelen Gill to their own 45-yard line. But the offense went three-and-out as Seattle took over at its own 12-yard line. The Seahawks moved the chains once before rookie edge rusher Tre'Mon Morris-Brash forced a third-down incompletion by hitting Sam Howell's arm. The Chargers took over at their own 27 but went three-and-out again. The Seahawks were eventually forced to punt but pinned the Bolts at their own 2-yard line. The Chargers once again went three-and-out as Seattle took over and advanced into the red zone as the first quarter came to a close.

Second Quarter

Seattle struck first on a 13-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Down 7-0, the Chargers turned the ball over on the first play of the drive as Stick was intercepted. Seattle added to its lead on a rushing score but missed the extra point. The Bolts then went three-and-out for a fourth time before Troy Dye stepped up on defense with a pressure and a sack on back-to-back plays.

The Bolts punted again but the defense stepped up as JT Woods and Deane Leonard had pass breakups to force a Seattle punt. Stick then moved the offense a bit with an 11-yard run and 15-yard pass to Stone Smartt to get into Seattle territory. The Bolts drive stalled out but Cameron Dicker nailed a 58-yard field goal to get the Chargers on the board.

Seattle drove past midfield but Nick Niemann's sack pushed the Seahawks out of field goal range. The Bolts took over at their own 5-yard line but were forced to punt late in the half. The Chargers trailed 13-3 at the half.

Third Quarter

Seattle began with the ball and marched into the red zone before eventually facing fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line. But Niemann and Shane Lee teamed up stuff the run and force a turnover on downs. Max Duggan entered the game at quarterback for the Bolts and moved the chains on the ground but the Chargers were eventually forced to punt. The Bolts defense forced another Seattle punt and took over at their own 8-yard line just before the third quarter came to a close.

Fourth Quarter

Duggan moved the Chargers into Seattle territory after a 29-yard pass to Simi Fehoko, but the drill stalled out and the Bolts punted for the eighth time of the night. Thomas Harper registered the Bolts third sack of the night but Seattle later converted on third-and-16 to move the chains. The Seahawks eventually settled for a 48-yard field goal. Down 16-3, the Bolts began at their own 40-yard line after Seattle's kickoff was short of the landing zone. Luis Perez came in at quarterback and hit Jaylen Johnson for a 36-yard gain.

The Bolts soon faced fourth-and-3 at the Seattle 17 but Perez's pass for Brenden Rice was incomplete as the Chargers turned it over on downs. The Bolts defense forced a quick Seattle punt and took over at their own 33-yard line. Perez hit three straight completions to get the Bolts past midfield but the drive stalled from there. The Chargers fell 16-3 in their preseason opener and will host the Rams on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. (PT).
