Chargers Sign Pair to Practice Squad

The Los Angeles Chargers signed a pair of players to the practice squad on Tuesday.

One is a new name to Chargers fans while one is a familiar face in tight end Vince Mayle and running back Detrez Newsome. The team also announced that they waived tight end Thomas Duarte from the practice squad as well.

The 6-2, 247-pound Mayle has appeared in 23 games over the past three seasons split between the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens, including all 16 a year ago for the Ravens. He initially entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick (123rd overall) of the Cleveland Browns in 2015, but was waived during final roster reductions. He signed to the Cowboys days later, splitting time the rest of the year between the active roster and practice squad. Mayle took an unusual path to the NFL as he started out playing basketball at Shasta College before making the change to football. He played wide receiver at Sierra College before transferring to Washington State.

Meanwhile, Newsome returns to the Chargers after being waived from the active roster on Monday to make room for Justin Jackson. The 5-10, 210-pound running back led the team in carries (42), rushing yards (150) and touchdowns (two) in the preseason. He also proved to be a receiving threat, leading the Bolts with 10 catches as well. He had one regular season carry against Buffalo.
