The Chargers are 8-5 after a 19-17 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.
Here is a game recap from Week 14.
First Quarter
Justin Herbert, Derwin James, Bradley Bozeman, Rashawn Slater, Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa were the Chargers captains. The Bolts won the toss and elected to defer. The Chargers defense took the field first and held the Chiefs to three points. Kansas City drove down to the 27-yard line before Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu split a sack on Mahomes. Kansas City took a 3-0 lead on a 47-yard field goal. The Chargers converted a key third down early when Herbert connected on a 21-yard pass to Quentin Johnston, who was on the end of personal foul that added 15 more yards. But the Bolts were hurt by a holding penalty as they ended up punting on their first possession. The Bolts defense responded by making the Chiefs punt as Tuli Tuipulotu pressured Mahomes on third down to force an incompletion. The Chargers started at their own 2-yard line but quickly moved the sticks. Herbert converted a third-and-1 on a QB sneak before he found Joshua Palmer for 38 yards to get into KC territory. But the drive stalled and the Chargers punted it away for the second straight possession. The Bolts trailed 3-0 after the first quarter.
Second Quarter
The Chargers defense kept the third-down pressure up as Bosa sacked Mahomes to force another Chiefs punt.
The Chargers then went three-and-out as Herbert couldn't find an open Palmer for what would have been an 80-plus yard touchdown. James got to Mahomes on the ensuing possession for the Chargers third sack of the night but a defensive penalty on third down kept the Chiefs drive alive.
But more third-down pressure from Mack forced a Mahomes incompletion as the Chiefs kicked another field goal. Down 6-0 midway through the second quarter, the Bolts offense started at their own 41 after a 37-yard return from Derius Davis. But the Chargers went three-and-out before J.K. Scott pinned the Chiefs at their own 9 after a punt. The Chargers defense then forced a three-and-out as the offense started at their own 35 with 4:45 left in the first half. But the drive went three-and-out as Herbert was injured and left the field with trainers after taking a hit. The Chiefs then added to their lead late in the quarter with a 9-yard touchdown pass. The Chargers trailed 13-0 at the half.
Third Quarter
The Chargers delivered a massive response to open the second half with a lengthy touchdown drive that spanned 79 yards in 13 plays and took nearly eight minutes off the clock. Herbert converted on third-and-1 early in the drive with a QB sneak before the Bolts went for it on fourth-and-2 at the Chiefs 40, with Palmer hauling in a 15-yard pass to move the chains. Stone Smartt caught a 21-yard pass to get in the red zone before Gus Edwards capped off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.
The Chargers defense opened the second half by forcing a three-and-out on Kansas City's first possession of the second half. Quentin Johnston drew a pass interference call to open the next drive that picked up 39 yards before Smartt hauled in a 24-yard pass. Johnston finished off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown catch as the Bolts pulled ahead by the score of 14-13 late in the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The Chiefs responded by taking the lead on a 50-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Down 16-14, the Chargers put together a drive of their own as they mixed the run and the pass to get in the red zone. But the drive stalled out as Cameron Dicker hit a 37-yard field goal to put the Bolts up 17-16 with 4:35 left in regulation. The Chiefs converted a third-and-10 to move into Chargers territory with a 14-yard completion. The Chiefs picked up another first down as the Chargers used two timeouts before the 2-minute warning. Kansas City drained the clock and kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired. The Chargers dropped to 8-5 on the season and will host Tampa Bay in Week 15 at SoFi Stadium.
