Chargers Fall at Home to Chiefs in Week 4

Game Recap W4 KC

The Chargers dropped to 2-2 on the season after Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Chiefs.

Here is a game recap from Week 4.

First Quarter

Justin Herbert, Bradley Bozeman, Trey Pipkins III, Alohi Gilman, Khalil Mack and Denzel Perryman were the Chargers captains. The Chargers win the toss and elect to defer. The Bolts start on defense on and forced a takeaway on the opening possession. Tuli Tuipulotu knocked the ball free as it was recovered by Elijah Molden.

The Bolts took advantage of the takeaway by responding with a touchdown drive. J.K. Dobbins had a 12-yard run that moved the chains before Herbert found Will Dissly on a screen pass for 22 yards. Ladd McConkey got the Bolts into the red zone with a 15-yard catch before finishing the drive off with a 7-yard touchdown pass. Herbert delivered a pinpoint pass as McConkey hauled in the pass while falling down.

The Bolts kept up their hot start as Kristian Fulton picked off Patrick Mahomes on the first play of the ensuing possession. Fulton fumbled on the return and it was initially awarded to Kansas City but the play was overturned as the Kansas City player was out of bounds when he recovered the ball. The Bolts turned the takeaway into more points as Cameron Dicker hit a 50-yard field goal to give the Chargers an early 10-0 lead. The Chargers defense remained relentless as Bud Dupree sacked Mahomes on third down to force a quick three-and-out by the Kansas City offense.

The Chargers held the ball and led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter

The Bolts punted it away early in the second quarter as the Chiefs began at their own 35. But the Chargers defense forced another punt as Mahomes threw incomplete on third-and-1. The Bolts offense started at their own 6-yard line but went three-and-out as they also couldn't convert on third-and-1. But the Chargers got to Mahomes on a timely sack on the following drive as Tarheeb Still and Troy Dye teamed up to bring down the quarterback and push KC out of field goal range.

The Bolts began at their own 2-yard line on the ensuing drive but punted it away as the Chiefs began at their own 46 with just over four minutes left in the quarter. The Chiefs scored on the first play for a 54-yard touchdown to cut the Chargers lead to 10-7. The Bolts offensive struggles continued as Herbert was sacked on third down to force a fourth straight punt. The Chiefs missed a 65-yard field goal on the final play of the half as the Chargers held a 10-7 lead at the break.

Third Quarter

The Bolts began the second half on offense and quickly moved into KC territory after a 37-yard reception by McConkey. But the drive ended without points as Dicker's 55-yard field goal was wide right. The Chiefs tied the game at 10 on the ensuing possession with a 37-yard field goal. Herbert found Joshua Palmer for 26 yards on the first play of the ensuing drive to get into Chiefs territory. The Bolts then converted twice on third down before Quentin Johnston moved the chains on third-and-9. The teams were tied at 10 headed to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter

The Bolts faced fourth-and-1 at the Chiefs 3 early in the fourth quarter but Herbert threw incomplete for a turnover on downs. But the Chiefs couldn't do much as they punted it away with just over nine minutes left to go. The Chargers took over on their own 15 but went three-and-out to give the ball right back to the Chiefs. Kansas City took the lead on the ensuing drive on a 2-yard touchdown run. Herbert was sacked on third down on the next drive as the Bolts punted it away with less than four minutes to go. The Chiefs converted on third-and-6 on the next drive as the Chargers used up all of their timeouts and didn't get the ball back. The Bolts lost 17-10 and dropped to 2-2 on the season. The Chargers have a Week 5 bye.
