Why the Chargers Brought Back Denzel Perryman in Free Agency

The Chargers agreed to terms with the veteran linebacker Wednesday, a move that brought back a team captain from last season

The Chargers on Wednesday announced that linebacker Denzel Perryman is returning to the squad.

The linebacker agreed to terms on a new contract with the team.

Perryman in 2024 returned to the Chargers — the franchise that drafted him in 2015 — and made 11 starts.

The 32-year-old can still provide some pop, especially in the run game, and is viewed as a tone setter on the defensive side of the ball. Perryman's leadership qualities were also admired as he was voted a team captain in 2024.

Perryman helped mentor Daiyan Henley this past season as the youngster had a breakout campaign and developed into a Pro-Bowl level player.

Perhaps Perryman will do the same in 2025 with Junior Colson, a 2024 third-round pick who could be in line for more playing time in Year 2. The Chargers also brought back linebacker Troy Dye earlier on Wednesday.

Even if Colson assumes a potential starting role, Perryman offers plenty of depth and experience with 119 career games played.

If Perryman starts again next to Henley, that duo proved to be a strong tandem in 2024. But if Perryman takes on more of a secondary role in 2025, he'll be tasked with guiding Colson while staying ready to help the defense in any way possible.

The Los Angeles Chargers today agreed to terms with linebacker Denzel Perryman. Perryman has recorded 717 career tackles and 7.5 sacks. In the 2024 season, he recorded 55 tackles and 1 sack.
