Here are five things you need to know about new quarterback Geno Smith, who agreed to terms with the Chargers on a one-year deal on Sunday.
1. Miramar High School Alum – Smith attended Miramar High School in Miramar, Florida. However, he isn't the only notable name to have been a Patriot. Other famous Miramar alums include former WR Stedman Bailey and all-pro kicker Dean Biasucci, along with an actor you may have heard of by the name of Johnny Depp.
2. Connections with Coach – Similar to how Anthony Lynn was familiar Cardale Jones prior to his arrival last season, the head coach also has ties to Smith. Lynn and the QB spent a pair of seasons together with the Jets from 2013 – 2014.
3. Sunday Heroes – Smith started a philanthropic initiative called "7 Sunday Heroes" when he was with the Jets. He'll bring special guests onto the field at each home game. Guests have varied from inspirational individuals, like a 9/11 first responder, or organizations making impacts like a local Boys and Girls Club.
4. Geno's Genes – Smith comes from a family of athletes. His granduncle on his father's side was a world-class hurdler. He also is related to former University of Miami running back Melvin Bratton.
5. He's a III – Smith's full name is Eugene Cyril Smith III. He was named after his father who was named after his father.
