Peter Schrager of Fox Sports and "Good Morning Football" was a guest on Friday's episode of Chargers Weekly, the official podcast of the team.
Schrager discussed what he's hearing about the 2018 Chargers from people in league and media circles. He also shared his observations from the first week of preseason and revealed a league storyline that more fans should be paying attention to. Below are a couple of highlights from the conversation:
Buzz Surrounding the Chargers
"Everyone I speak to around the league and also in my writing and sports media world is penciling in the Chargers to be a really, really competitive team – not just in the AFC West, but potentially for the AFC and to give the Patriots a run for their money. I think it's such an exciting time for the Chargers and if we're talking right now – August, mid-August – it doesn't get better than this."
Overcoming the Chiefs; AFC West Quarterbacks
"I can't give the Chargers the nod until I see them give Andy Reid and his team a beating. That's first and foremost. Then I look at the quarterback position because I look around that division: (Patrick) Mahomes is a question mark at the moment; (Case) Keenum: great season, nice playoff run, let's see; and then Derek Carr, (he was) great in 2016, got injured, wasn't the same guy in 2017. So, I look at this quarterback in Philip Rivers, and I think that is the most stable, most consistent, most reliable guy in the division. And if America saw this Chargers team on Thanksgiving last year, the sky is the limit. So for me, one-word answer? I'd say potential, and the potential is sky-high."
Listen to Friday's entire episode, which also includes fantasy football talk with Yahoo Sports' Matt Harmon. Harmon tells you whom to draft No. 1 overall and suggests a few sleepers to consider in later rounds.
