Johnston, Chark Hopeful Chargers Can Unveil Full-Strength WR Room in Cleveland

The Chargers wide receiver group had perhaps their best game of the season Sunday.

Joshua Palmer and Jalen Reagor hauled in explosive plays while Simi Fehoko probably should have had a touchdown catch but responded to draw a key pass interference call.

The standout, of course, was rookie Ladd McConkey, who tallied six catches for 111 yards and two scores. It was the first 100-yard game by a Bolts wide receiver this season.

"He just did a great job showing late hands," Justin Herbert said of McConkey on Wednesday. "He sees the ball the entire way and doesn't let the defender know it's coming so he doesn't have an opportunity to make a play on it.

"Then to snatch the ball away and keep running, that was very important, too," Herbert added.

The Chargers offense has seen an uptick in explosive plays of late, but even more help could on the way for that unit beginning Sunday in Cleveland.

DJ Chark, who began the season on Injured Reserve with a hip injury, has yet to play this season.

But the wide receiver said Wednesday that he's feeling more comfortable in practice and could possibly make his Chargers debut in Week 9.

"The first week back was kind of slow," Chargers said. "But the second week was better just getting back into it. We'll see how the week progresses and go from there."

He later added: "Just continue to progress throughout the week, but I think as long as I'm tracking the way I am, I feel like that's a very real possibility."

Chark said the biggest hurdle the past two months was staying mentally tough while rehabbing his injury.

"Frustrating, of course, but taking it one day at a time, practicing mindfulness and things like that," Chark said. "Trying to stay focused on what I can control and it's been working, helping me out a lot. Being out pretty much two months in a football season is like years.

"But I can't wait to play with my guys, I love these guys. They're great teammates, they've been very supportive and I just want to come and pull my weight," Chark added. "Nothing more, nothing less, and help this team win."

Herbert on Wednesday spoke about what Chark's potential return could mean for the offense.

"He's a physical receiver, very athletic," Herbert said. "He's one of those guys that goes up and gets the ball. He adds a lot of dimensions to our offense.

"It's been tough, injuries are never fun but he's been fighting to do everything he can to get back out on the field," Herbert added.

While Chark's return could give the offense a boost, so could the return of Quentin Johnston, who has missed the past two games with an ankle injury.

The 2023 first-round pick said Wednesday that is focus this week is "getting healthy, staying healthy and playing this Sunday."

"I wanted to come back last week but I felt like I was going to hurt the team more than help it, so I took the extra week off," Johnston said. "But we won so that's always good and I was there in full support."

If Chark and Johnston are active Sunday in Cleveland, the Bolts could unveil their wide receiver room was revamped this offseason.

"Everybody is feeding off each other," Johnston said. "It starts in the receiver room and then trickles over to the running backs, the tight ends, everybody.

"Just having the belief in ourselves and our quarterback," Johnston said. "He has a lot of trust in us. If he trusts you, you really have no choice but to put your best foot forward."

Chark added: "Hopefully we get Q back soon and we can finally go out there like we were supposed to Week 1."
