Camp Report: Kristian Fulton Stays Hot With Pair of Picks

FultonCR

The Chargers had a lighter day of practice Monday as they were not in pads and went at a walk-through pace for some drills.

The Bolts will practice again Tuesday at 1 p.m. in El Segundo.

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Monday's practice:

1. Fulton snags 2 INTs

Kristian Fulton is on a heater right now.

The Chargers cornerback, who has been among the camp standouts so far, had two more interceptions in team drills Monday.

Fulton now has four interceptions in camp, all of which have come in the past three practices.

Fulton's first takeaway Monday came in an 11-on-11 drill. He perfectly read and out route and jumped Max Duggan's pass as there was nothing but green grass in front of him for the next 40 yards.

He later intercepted Easton Stick in a full-team drill when the quarterback was looking for Joshua Palmer on third-and-4.

Fulton also had interceptions in Sunday's joint practice against the Rams and in Friday's practice.

Asante Samuel, Jr. also continued his recent strong play with a pair of pass breakups. Tarheeb Still and AJ Finley also tallied PBUs on the day.

Nick Niemann also nabbed an interception that turned into a pick-6, but defensive pass interference likely would have been called on another defender to negate the takeaway.

A day after dominating the Rams, the defense once again earned praised from Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh.

"I thought our defense progressed today and they were taking it and they did get better."

A final defensive note: linebacker Junior Colson, who has not practiced in camp due to an appendectomy, worked on the side in pads.

"Returning to play for Junior, as you've seen, he's getting closer and closer," Harbaugh said.

2. Punt game in focus

The Bolts spent a practice period working on punt return drills.

Derius Davis lined up at returner and was joined by Jaelen Gill and Elijah Dotson.

Deane Leonard and Ja'Sir Taylor, the Bolts top vice players in recent years, manned those spots along with Finley.

Chris Wilcox, Thomas Harper, Cam Hart, Tony Jefferson, Still, Akeem Dent, Matt Hankins and Jalyn Phillips also worked at vice during the drill.

The Bolts later practice a hurry-up punt situation in which the offense started on the field as the clock wound down. The punt team then sprinted onto the field and simulated getting a kick off before time expired.

Chargers Special Teams Coordinator Ryan Ficken later worked exclusively with a group of kickoff returners in preparation for Saturday's 4:05 p.m. preseason opener against Seattle at SoFi Stadium.

Davis, Gill, Jaret Patterson, Dotson and Isaiah Spiller were among the returners.

3. Harbaugh on the offense

The Chargers have had to do some shuffling on offense of late.

Justin Herbert, of course, is not practicing. Offensive linemen Trey Pipkins III and Jamaree Salyer also did not practice Monday.

As a result, it was a scattered performance from all three offensive units.

"Offensively, we have to keep chipping away at it," Harbaugh said. "Overall as a group, maybe it was heavy legs or lethargic a little bit.

"Just not as mentally sharp as I would have liked it," Harbaugh added. "Go in, go back, go measure it and keep striving to be better."

One bright spot was that Quentin Johnston and Donald Parham, Jr. returned to team drills after each recently missed time.
