Camp Report: Harbaugh Outlines Playing Time for Preseason Finale

FCR

That's a wrap on Chargers Training Camp.

The Bolts will now turn their attention to Saturday's preseason finale in Dallas before initial 53-man rosters must be submitted Tuesday by 1 p.m. (PT).

The Chargers will follow a Week Zero schedule next week in preparation for Week 1 against the Raiders on September 8.

Here is the final Chargers Camp Report from Thursday's practice:

1. The plan for Dallas

The Chargers are mixing things up for their preseason finale in Dallas.

While numerous starters played in the first two preseason games —some more than others — Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday that the plan is to give youngsters more of a shot against the Cowboys.

Harbaugh said a group of about 15 starters on offense and 15 starters on defense won't play in the game.

Easton Stick will start at quarterback, with Harbaugh noting the plan is for him and others to play the entire game.

"Go have it," Harbaugh said. "I feel like they're in a great place. I feel like we've got guys we feel like we can count on but that leaves about 20 spots open — 10 on offense and 10 on defense — to really show that they're the best players."

"That next wave, [we want] to be able to tell who the best players are," Harbaugh added.

Harbaugh praised the Chargers four days of practice this week and added some humor to his post-practice press conference.

"It's been crisp. Four in a row," Harbaugh said. "That's been fantastic. I'm feeling so good I'm taking Mrs. Harbaugh out on a date night tonight."

2. Herbert's big week

What a week for Justin Herbert.

He returned to practice Monday for the first time since July 31 while dealing with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot.

And while he looked good Monday, he got even better as the week progressed.

Herbert had a magical performance on Wednesday and was sharp again Thursday afternoon.

He began by finding Quentin Johnston on three straight completions to open team drills.

Herbert then threw five total touchdowns in just over an hour's worth of work, beginning with touchdown passes to Donald Parham, Jr. and Simi Fehoko in a red-zone, 7-on-7 drill.

He kept up the precision in 11-on-11 drills with scores to Joshua Palmer, Fehoko and Brenden Rice.

Harbaugh quipped Thursday that he was running out of adjectives to describe Herbert's play all week.

"Every [adjective] I can come up with in my head doesn't do it justice," Harbaugh said. "You were watching it.

"It's been great. Been infectious for the whole team, too," Harbaugh added.

3. Bosa making progress

Chargers edge rusher Joey Bosa worked off to the side at Thursday's practice.

It was his first appearance at a practice since leaving the Aug. 4 joint session with the Rams.

Harbaugh said Bosa is "working through something" but added that the veteran is "coming along good."

Does Harbaugh envision Bosa playing in Week 1?

"That's what I've been told," Harbaugh said.
