Camp Report: Easton Stick to Start at QB Against Rams

Stick Camp Report 18

The Bolts wrapped up another week of practice with a non-padded session Thursday evening.

Next up? Their second preseason game against the Rams at SoFi Stadium.

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Thursday's practice:

1. Stick to start Saturday

Easton Stick took all but one of the first-team reps Thursday, a sign that the quarterback was in line to start the second preseason game.

Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed the fact after practice and noted that the quarterback had a "good week" on the field.

Stick threw a pair of red-zone touchdown passes Thursday to Brenden Rice and Quentin Johnston in team drills.

"I thought we saw some real improvements just in the timing of the passing game and the protection as well," Harbaugh said. "We're working on things in the running game, that same kind of timing, just chipping away at it.

"I thought Easton in particular had a good week," Harbaugh added. "Excited about it, excited about the opportunity in the game Saturday."

Harbaugh said all three quarterbacks — Stick, Luis Perez and Max Duggan — will play Saturday.

Justin Herbert will not play, but there was a positive sign Thursday when No. 10 was working out in the weight room without a walking boot in the early stages of practice.

"I think it felt like progress," Harbaugh said.

Herbert had been spotted on the practice field in the boot the past few weeks.

Harbaugh on Thursday gave the latest update on the franchise quarterback.

"Just on track," Harbaugh said. "That's really the only medical things that I've been updated on regarding Justin."

2. A legendary speech

Speaking of quarterbacks, a pretty important one gave the post-practice speech on Thursday.

Hall of Famer Dan Fouts took in practice and spent a few minutes dishing out some life lessons to the Bolts.

"It was a tremendous message about playing for your teammate, playing to win, his mindset," Harbaugh said. "He told a great story about the game in Miami, the 'Epic in Miami.' It was so cool to hear that story from his perspective, the stalwart effort from he and his teammates and Kellen Winslow. That was cool."

Harbaugh quipped that while some people might have to look up the iconic 1981 AFC Divisional Playoff game between the Chargers and Dolphins, Harbaugh remembers watching it live.

Harbaugh said Fouts also relayed a story in which he said pregame dinners with offensive teammates would be based on the previous game's result.

If the Bolts won, Fouts would foot the bill for steaks and lobsters. If the Bolts lost, the offensive line would pay up for spaghetti.

"During that 'Epic in Miami', he was talking about how he got down to the end of the drive and [said], 'What's it going to be guys, steak or spaghetti?' Harbaugh said. "Cool stuff. Hall of Famer, Dan Fouts, got a great reception from the team. Guys love him."

Fouts, who will be the color analyst on CBS LA for Saturday's game, ranks second in franchise history in passing yards, touchdown passes, completions and atempts.

3. Tart makes early impression

Newly-signed defensive lineman Teair Tart made a strong first impression.

Tart was lined up with the third-team defense Thursday when he used a nice move to get into the backfield.

"He had a good day out there today, first time out there. Made a nice quick move," Harbaugh said.

The Bolts added Tart to their defensive line room Thursday, bringing in a player with 47 career games of experience.

Harbaugh said the Chargers looked into adding Tart to the roster in the spring and pounced on the chance to do so when he became available this week.

"It was somebody we looked at in the offseason when we were evaluating inside players," Harbaugh said. "Had him ranked high, pretty darn high. When he became available, he was a guy that was right there on the ready list.

"Teair was somebody I really remembered thinking very highly of during the offseason evaluations, in free agency," Harbaugh added. "Got a chance to meet with him last night and so did my dad. Just came away with that meeting with, 'I really like him. He'd be a great addition to the current 90-man roster.'"

Harbaugh said it's unlikely that Tart plays Saturday against the Rams.
