Camp Report: Still's Pick-6 Caps Off Physical Practice

Camp Report Day 8

The Chargers put the pads back on Thursday, practicing for two-plus hours at The Bolt.

The Bolts will practice again Friday at 5 p.m. before an off day Saturday.

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Thursday's practice:

1. Still has walk-off, pick-6

Tarheeb Still ended Thursday's practice with a bang.

With the Chargers focused on a 2-minute drill in the final team period, the Bolts rookie cornerback ensured that drill lasted just one play when he took an interception back for a walk-off touchdown.

Still, a recent fifth-round pick, was in strong coverage on Derius Davis' out route and jumped in front of the pass from Max Duggan.

"Tarheeb made a nice play on that," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said after practice. "Max threw it a little bit inside and Tarheeb made a heck of a good play."

Still's highlight-reel play continued a solid camp for him and built off a strong spring, too. The former Maryland standout turned heads during the final minicamp practices in June, including when an interception against the first-team offense.

2. Stick steps in at QB

The Chargers announced Thursday that quarterback Justin Herbert was diagnosed with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot following Wednesday's practice.

Doctors have recommended approximately two weeks in a boot — followed by a graduated return to play protocol — with the expectation that he will be ready for the start of the regular season.

"Full steam ahead," Harbaugh said when asked about Herbert missing time. "The preparation, the work continues.

"He's not on the field in practice but [the] meeting room... he's still in a training environment that chemistry, that rapport that you build with those position players, his teammates, that continues," Harbaugh added.

As a result, Easton Stick took first-team reps Thursday and had numerous strong moments.

The Chargers worked in the red zone during a 7-on-7 drill, which Stick started with a touchdown to Joshua Palmer. Stick fired a dart to Palmer, who made a contested grab near the corner of the end zone.

It was one of two touchdowns during the session for Stick, who was able to later find Jaylen Johnson over the middle as he ran his way in for the score.

Stick also made a noteworthy throw in an 11-on-11 drill on third-and-9 when he withstood pressure and zipped a pass to tight end Zach Heins over the middle for a first down.

"He was the same that he was the day before. He attacks everything he does," Harbaugh said of Stick. "The way he goes about his business is always top notch."

3. A physical practice

A day after going through a non-padded practice, Harbaugh ramped up the intensity for the Bolts on Thursday.

That included multiple live tackling sessions, including one play with the starters. It was third-and-1 but running back Jaret Patterson was able to move the chains with a short gain up the middle.

Earlier in practice, the Chargers did a 9-on-7 drill in which the defense outnumbered the offense on run plays.

The defense was stout in the drill as both Tuli Tuipulotu and Chris Rumph II had tackles for loss. The drill ended on fourth-and-2 as Patterson was stopped short of the sticks by outside linebacker Ty Shelby.

"Our defense was really impressive today, the kind of run wall that you want to see," Harbaugh said of the drill. "That's super encouraging. You just like to see it. Like I said the other day, you'd much rather see that early in camp than you would the offense gashing. We're progressing well.

"You got to have a run wall, we aspire to have a run wall, we strive for that. Offensively, chip away, here we go," Harbaugh added. "[When] we get back and look at the tape, get an opportunity to do that. They're going to make us better, which was predicted and coming to fruition and bodes well for us."

Harbaugh later stood in at quarterback during 1-on-1 drills between offensive and defensive linemen.

The best matchup of the day came between Rashawn Slater and Joey Bosa, who battled to a draw on the first rep before Bosa won the second. Poona Ford and Bradley Bozeman also split their reps.

"It was good, both sides, there was some good give and take there. I like seeing it right up close," Harbaugh said. "I thought Joey Bosa had an incredible day. Bradley Bozeman was especially good, too.

"There was true evidence of a strong pass rush and guys that are able to protect as well," Harbaugh added. "Really good work there."

Other standouts included Trey Pipkins III and Zion Johnson, both of whom had a pair of wins. Tuipulotu also won both of his reps, too.

A final defensive note: linebacker Troy Dye had a strong practice in coverage while defensive lineman CJ Okoye had a noticeable tackle for loss on a run play.
