Ladd McConkey continues to rewrite the franchise record books.
On an afternoon where the Bolts punched their ticket to the postseason, the rookie wide receiver etched himself in Chargers lore even further Saturday in New England.
McConkey set new Chargers rookie records in receptions and receiving yards, as he now sits at 77 receptions for 1,054 yards. He surpassed Keenan Allen's old records of 71 catches for 1,046 yards that were set in 2013.
Among the long list of standout Chargers rookies in the history of the franchise, McConkey now sits at the top.
"He's been an incredible teammate, he's been humble and hungry from Day 1," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said. "He's a mighty man, a football player.
"There's been a lot of great receivers in Chargers history, so to set the rookie receiving record is just phenomenal," Harbaugh added.
McConkey added: "That's good company, for sure."
But even on an afternoon where the rookie set some new records, he was most happiest about what he was able to contribute to the win that has the Bolts playing into January.
"It's cool but I'm just excited we're going to the playoffs," McConkey said with a smile.
He later added: "You hear so many guys say to not take it for granted who have been in the league for years. It's a special group of guys who have put in the work. We had an opportunity in front of us and we took it."
However, even though McConkey was quick to look past the accolades, the rookie also took a moment of reflection.
"We get so caught up in practice and meetings and all this, but when I sit back and think about it, it's definitely a special moment," McConkey said. "But making the playoffs is even more special.
"I just want to keep contributing to my team and keep making plays," McConkey added.
The rookie wide receiver finished Week 17 with eight catches for 94 yards and a pair of scores, as his catches helped the Bolts gain control the game early and never look back.
His first touchdown of the game came on the Chargers' fourth drive of the game with the offense inside the 10-yard line threatening to score.
As Herbert dropped back to pass, McConkey showed off his feel and found a soft spot in the Patriots defense.
The quarterback zipped a pass to the back of the end zone to a waiting McConkey, who secured the score.
"He's got great understanding of defenses, leverage and how people play him," Herbert said. "And he finds a way to get open."
His second score of the day blew the game open in the second half — and was a special both on and off the field.
On the Chargers first offensive drive of the second half, McConkey showed off the burners and beat the defense deep as Herbert found him on a deep ball from 40 yards out. That catch set the receiving yards record.
After the score however, he ran to the stands behind the Chargers bench and gave the ball to his aunt, Jodi, who was in attendance at the game.
"I kept the first one, the touchdown. I gave the other one to my Aunt Jodi," McConkey said. "I obviously talked to them before the game, they live in Georgia and were visiting some friends in Boston. They were here for the weekend … I saw them in warmups."
He later added: "It was awesome to see the smile on her face."
McConkey's Week 17 performance was one where he showed it all — his ability to thrive in short, intermediate and deep areas of the field.
He's got the full confidence of his teammates, all of whom lauded praise on the rookie after the game.
"He's such a tough player. He's a playmaker and finds ways to get open," Herbert said. "He's done such a great job of battling injuries and being out there for us.
"He's a guy we trust on third down. Anytime we go out there, he's a threat," Herbert added. "All I have to do is get him the ball and he makes my job so much easier."
Safety Derwin James, Jr., added: "Ladd is that guy. I told him before the game I wanted him to get to 1,000 yards. I've been keeping track for him all year. He got there today and I'm proud of him. He's a baller, man."
In just Year 1, McConkey quickly rose to become one of the most valuable members of the Chargers offense, as he said he continues to get better and better each week.
And it shows, as Saturday's record-setting performance was just another big, standout moment in what's been as season full of them for the No. 34 overall pick.
"I just try to play my game and don't try to force anything and let it come to you," McConkey said. "That's always been my game."
He later added: "I'm right where I'm supposed to be."
