3 Impressive Chargers Stats Entering Week 2

Dobbins

The Bolts are 1-0 coming off a Week 1 home win over the Raiders.

The Chargers will now turn their attention to a road date with the Panthers. Kickoff is at 10 a.m. (PT) from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Here are three key Chargers stats ahead of Week 2:

1. Dobbins' rush yards over expected

J.K. Dobbins flourished in his powder blue debut by rushing for 135 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

"I didn't like J.K.'s performance. I loved it in all ways," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said.

The Chargers running back's big day was highlighted by a pair of explosive runs of 46 and 61 yards, both of which came in the second half.

But Dobbins seemingly made those highlight plays out of nothing as he gained a whopping plus-99 rushing yards over expected (RYOE) on the two runs, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

Dobbins was only expected to gain six yards on his 46-yard burst, meaning he had a plus-40 RYOE on that attempt.

And his fourth-quarter run for 61 yards was only expected to be a two-yard gain as he tallied a plus-59 RYOE on the game-sealing play.

Dobbins had the NFL's top two RYOE plays in Week 1, and also ranked third among all NFL players with a Rushing Expected Points Added of 7.4.

Dobbins played in just one game in 2023 after suffering a torn Achilles.

"He's still got it. Never had a doubt about that," said center Bradley Bozeman, who played with Dobbins in Baltimore. "He ran hard [Sunday], had a lot of passion."

2. No red zone for the Raiders

The Chargers defense swarmed the Raiders in multiple facets Sunday afternoon at SoFi Stadium.

The Bolts tallied 4.0 sacks, three takeaways and limited Las Vegas to just 71 rushing yards on 22 carries (3.2 yards per attempt).

But perhaps the most impressive stat from the Chargers defense from Week 1 was the fact they allowed the Raiders to run just one play in the red zone, the fewest amount of any team across the league.

Naturally, Las Vegas' lone play in the red zone ended with a sack from Khalil Mack that pushed the Raiders back outside the 20-yard line early in the fourth quarter.

The Raiders ended up kicking a field goal on the drive for their only points of the second half. The Chargers, meanwhile, ran 11 red-zone plays Sunday, tied for the 10th-most in the NFL.

3. Winning the TO battle

One week into the season, the Bolts are tied for the league's best turnover differential at plus-3.

"The defense stepped up big time with some big stops and got a couple turnovers," Justin Herbert said after Sunday's game.

The Chargers were among six teams that forced three takeaways in Week 1, but only the Bolts and Pittsburgh didn't commit a turnover among that group.

The Steelers, ironically, also held their opponent to just 10 points in a Week 1 win. The teams will meet in Week 3 in Pittsburgh.
