Back in February, Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz made one thing clear at his introductory press conference.
He will always look to churn over the bottom of the roster and make the Bolts as strong as possible on a year-round basis.
"Well, that's what we're going to go out there and do," Hortiz said. "You do it through free agency. You do it pre-draft, post-draft in free agency. You do those summer signings, the cap casualties."
He later added: "We're always going to be looking to make this team better."
Hortiz stuck to those words Wednesday when the Chargers announced they had claimed running back Hassan Haskins off waivers.
Haskins, a 2022 fourth-round pick by Tennessee, was waived by the Titans on Tuesday. He now joins the Chargers 53-man roster as JT Woods was waived in a corresponding move.
Ever since Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh was hired in January, the Bolts have talked about the need to improve the run game.
Haskins can give the Bolts a boost there if needed in place of Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins.
The 24-year-old played for Harbaugh at Michigan where he tallied 2,324 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns from 2018-2021.
But look for Haskins to also carve out a role on special teams, too, especially with linebacker Nick Niemann slated to miss at least the first four games of the season while on Injured Reserve.
Hortiz and Harbaugh have both spoken about the need to always be looking to improve the roster no matter what month of the calendar it is.
With the 2024 season opener a little over a week ago, the Chargers did just that on Wednesday.
