A Look at Chargers 3 Possible Wild Card Round Opponents

241230_AFCPlayoff

While there's still plenty to be sorted out around the NFL in Week 18, we know that the Chargers will face either Baltimore, Houston and Pittsburgh in the Wild Card Round.

The Bolts currently sit in the No. 6 seed — which means a matchup with the Ravens right now — but that could change by Sunday afternoon.

Here's a look at each of the three possible playoff opponents for the Bolts:

Houston Texans (9-7)

How can these teams meet?

If the Chargers end up as the No. 5 seed, that means traveling to Houston to take on the AFC South champion Texans, who are locked into the No. 4 seed.

The Bolts could get to the fifth seed with a win and a Steelers loss in Week 18.

With Pittsburgh playing on Saturday night, the Chargers will have a better understanding whether this scenario is possible heading into their game on Sunday in Las Vegas.

According to data provided by the NFL, this matchup has a 25 percent chance to happen (assuming no games end in a tie).

How did Houston get here?

The Texans have had a bit of a tale of two halves of sorts this season.

After starting off 6-2, they have gone 3-5 since then heading into the final week of the regular season. That includes two straight losses to the Chiefs and Ravens.

Second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud won't reach the numbers he had in his rookie season that earned him the Offensive Rookie of the Year, but he still ranks in the top 10 with 3,677 passing yards to go along with 19 touchdowns.

However, he has thrown 12 interceptions (tied fourth-most in NFL) after throwing just five last year.

He's been a featured part of their offense, as has running back Joe Mixon who has scored 11 touchdowns in 13 games.

Houston does go into the playoffs missing some key pieces on that side of the ball however, as they have lost two of their top three receivers in Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell to season-ending injuries.

Who's the Texans MVP?

Houston's MVP so far this year has been on the defensive side, as Danielle Hunter has had one of the best seasons of his career so far.

The four-time Pro Bowler has been wreaking havoc in his first year with the Texans, leading them with 12.0 sacks (third-most in NFL) and 17 tackles for loss.

But he's been active in speeding up quarterbacks, too, as he leads the NFL with 90 quarterback pressures in 16 games, according to Next Gen Stats.

An honorable mention here to cornerback Derek Stingley, Jr., who also has a case here as he is having a career season in his third year with five interceptions, 18 passes defensed and four tackles for loss.

Key Texans stat to know

Even with Hunter leading the way on the edge, fellow defensive end Will Anderson, Jr., is not too far behind him when it comes to getting after the quarterback with 11.0 sacks.

The duo has helped the Texans surpass their 2023 total in sacks (46.0), as they have 47.0 this season. That is tied for the third-most sacks by a team this year.

They've done it also while having the fifth-lowest blitz percentage in the league (21.2 percent) and sixth-lowest stunt percentage (14.3 percent), according to Pro Football Focus.

Baltimore Ravens (11-5)

How can these teams meet?

A Bolts trip to Baltimore — which means another Harbaugh Bowl — is the likeliest scenario heading into Week 18, as the NFL data has this matchup at a 50 percent chance of happening.

There are a couple of ways this could end up being the matchup, but the picture will be clearer once Saturday's games conclude.

If both the Ravens and Steelers win on Saturday afternoon, the Bolts will travel to face Baltimore on Wild Card Weekend regardless of the outcome of their game in Las Vegas.

If the Ravens win and Steelers lose, but the Chargers also lose, then they would also go to Baltimore.

And if all three lose in Week 18, the Bolts would travel to face the Ravens.

The two have crossed paths this season, as Baltimore won a Monday Night Football game at SoFi Stadium in Week 12 by a final score of 31-24.

How did Baltimore get here?

The Ravens have been on a heater since starting the season 0-2.

Baltimore has won 11 out of its past 14 games, including three straight since their Week 14 bye week as they control their own destiny and can clinch the AFC North with a victory this upcoming week.

Baltimore's offense has led the way as the unit has been atop the league in a multitude of categories all year long.

Lamar Jackson leads a Ravens offense that paces the NFL in offensive DVOA, yards per game (424.4), yards per pass play (8.58) and red-zone efficiency (74.19 percent).

The Ravens have also gotten a major boost from running back Derrick Henry, who has been stellar in his first season with the Ravens. Henry is second in NFL with 1,738 rushing yards, tied for second with 14 rushing scores and leads NFL in yards after contact (1,208).

Who's the Ravens' MVP?

It's the guy who has already won a pair of NFL MVPs.

This one is pretty straightforward, as Jackson enters the final week not only as the MVP of the Ravens, but also arguably of the league.

The two-time MVP has shattered personal bests this year with a career-high 3,955 passing yards and 39 passing touchdowns (tied for second-most in NFL) this season.

Jackson also leads all QBs in QB rating (121.6) and EPA per dropback (0.31).

A year after winning an MVP award, he's managed to go up another level and has the Ravens on the cusp of their fourth division title with him under center.

Key Ravens stat to know

Baltimore's defense ranks 14th overall in yards allowed per game (330.1) and 31st in passing yards allowed per game (248.5), but have the No. 1 rushing defense allowing just 81.6 yards per game.

However, despite a shaky first part of the season on the defensive side of the ball, the Ravens have really found their groove.

Since Week 11, the Ravens defense ranks second in the NFL in EPA per play (-0.142) and have the third-best coverage grade in that timespan at 82.2, according to PFF.

Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6)

How can these teams meet?

A meeting between the Chargers and Steelers would require Pittsburgh to win the AFC North — and the way that could happen is straightforward.

In order to clinch the division, Pittsburgh needs to beat Cincinnati and have Cleveland upset Baltimore earlier in the day.

If those two outcomes were to happen, the Bolts would once again travel to Pittsburgh for the Wild Card Round regardless of the outcome against the Raiders.

The two teams met back in Week 3, also in Pittsburgh, in a game where Justin Herbert left the game with an ankle injury in the third quarter. The Steelers would end up winning the game 20-10.

How did Pittsburgh get here?

The Steelers used a hot start to put themselves in a position to clinch a playoff spot and still have a chance at the division.

Pittsburgh started the season 10-3 but have cooled off since, dropping three straight games against the Eagles, Ravens and Chiefs.

They've seen two quarterbacks assume the starting role this year, with Justin Fields starting the first six games and veteran Russell Wilson taking over the last 10.

Wilson has enjoyed a bounce back season, throwing for 2,334 yards and 15 touchdowns with a 64.6 percent completion percentage.

And coupled with a Steelers defense that has been ranked in the top 10 in rushing yards allowed per game (100.6), third down defense (35.08) and points allowed per game (20.5), they have found a formula to win.

Who's the Steelers' MVP?

The 2021 Defensive Player of the Year could very well be on his way to another award this season.

While T.J. Watt's numbers aren't as flashy as they have been in other years, he continues to be one of the most impactful edge rushers in the league.

Watt leads the Steelers in sacks with 11.5 (tied for fourth-most in NFL), 19 tackles for loss and a career-high six forced fumbles on the year.

And even though he attracts a lot of extra attention when he's on the line of scrimmage, he makes plays when it's needed, as he's tied for the third-most sacks (6.5) in the NFL on third down.

He ranks first among edge rushers with at least 500 snaps in PFF's run defense grade with a 91.6 and is second in overall defensive grade with a 92.0.

Key Steelers stat to know

Pittsburgh has enjoyed airing the ball out since Wilson has been under center.

Since assuming the starting role in Week 7, the veteran quarterback has completed 21 passes of more than 20 yards, good for third-most in the NFL according to PFF.

Wilson is completing those at a 51.2 percent clip, which is also third best among quarterbacks with at least 30 attempts.

He has a 94.5 PFF grade on such throws, as Steelers have been able to create big plays because of this, with his average depth of target on those throws at 31.8 yards (second highest among quarterbacks with 30 attempts).
