5 Players Who Stood Out Against the Cowboys

5 players Jefferson

The Bolts wrapped up the preseason Saturday night with a 26-19 win at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Here are five players who stood out against the Cowboys:

S Tony Jefferson

Tony Jefferson, quite literally, stuffed the stat sheet Saturday afternoon.

The veteran safety put together a complete performance, finishing with a whopping stat line of 14 tackles (11 solo), two interceptions, a forced fumble, a sack, two passes defensed and a quarterback hit.

Jefferson looked as sharp as ever to close out the preseason.

"That was a sensational game," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said postgame. "A sack, forced fumble, two interceptions, [14] tackles. I've always had great respect for him, admiration for him and he played for my brother [in Baltimore].

"Family, that's family," Harbaugh added. "Great to see him do so well tonight."

He started out the game with five tackles on the first Cowboys drive of the game and notched a sack late in the first quarter.

Jefferson later forced his first turnover of the afternoon early in the second quarter, reading the play and jumping Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance's pass for the interception.

The veteran didn't stop wreaking havoc in the first half however, as he jarred the ball loose from Cowboys tight end John Stephens, Jr., on a tackle after the catch was made.

It brought his first half total to nine total tackles (seven solo), 1.0 sack, one tackle for loss, one interception and one forced fumble.

"I talked to the defense last night and said, from a safety perspective, that this was a game for us to be active and get after it," Jefferson said. "I missed last week — had a hamstring — and just felt healthy and got back in a groove.

"I had the juice flowing all week and just tried to carry over to the game," Jefferson added.

Jefferson continued that momentum into the second half, once again undercutting Lance's pass and picking him off in the end zone to prevent points.

It was an all-around impressive from the veteran safety.

"It took me a second to get rolling and back into it from a physical standpoint," Jefferson said. "I've finally hit my stride and the trainers did a good job of taking care of me last week. I was able to go out there and fly around today."

WR Derius Davis

All it took was one play in the preseason for Derius Davis to make an impact.

The Chargers second-year wide receiver received the first Bolts play from scrimmage on an end around, using his speed to get the edge.

And he never looked back.

Davis outran the entire Dallas defense to get to the end zone for the 70-yard rushing touchdown and the first Bolts points of the afternoon.

"The way he worked the sideline was incredible," Harbaugh said after the game Saturday. "The lesser man would not have scored on that play or stayed inbounds. It would have been a four, five-yard gain."

Harbaugh later added: "I didn't think he would be able to get it turned. But he did, incredible job of working the sideline by him. Really seeing his speed was great to see as well."

It was the TCU alum's first preseason action of the year. He also returned a punt in the limited action he saw Saturday afternoon.

The play was one that, according to Davis after the game, wasn't originally supposed to be called — but it worked out for the best.

"Funny story, that play was supposed to get called in the fourth play of the game," Davis said. "I told [Chargers quarterback coach] Shane [Day], let's make it the first play of the game. Called my shot and just hit it."

Davis later added: "That linebacker is really fast. Once I knew I got around him, I saw Brenden [Rice] making a good block on the sideline, took a dude to the sideline. Credit to Brenden for making that block. I was able to cut back and score."

Davis's return added a major speed element to the Bolts and it showed in a big way in the preseason finale.

"That's what I'm here for," Davis said. "I told the team I was going to be a spark, so that's what I want to be for the team."

OLB Tre'Mon Morris-Brash

Undrafted rookie Tre'Mon Morris-Brash continuously flashed throughout the spring and well into training camp.

He saved his best day for last on Saturday.

Morris-Brash finished the game in Dallas with three tackles, a sack, an interception, a tackle for loss and two passes defensed.

Not only was it the plays he made, but it was when he made them that stood out.

His tackle for loss came in the fourth quarter when he, along with a swarm of the Bolts defense, brought down a Dallas receiver on a third-and 4 for a loss of two and forced the Cowboys to kick a field goal.

On the very next Dallas drive with the Bolts holding a 20-19 lead, Morris-Brash came up big once again.

The rookie fell back from the line of scrimmage off the snap and was able to tip Lance's pass over the middle to himself for the interception. He took it and ran, barreling into the end zone to give the Bolts a 26-19 cushion.

WR Simi Fehoko

Just like Davis, wide receiver Simi Fehoko made his big splash in the first half.

The Bolts opened the second quarter with the ball on their own 22 as quarterback Easton Stick dropped back to pass.

With time in the pocket, Stick launched a ball to Fehoko down the right sideline, who had a step on the cornerback and hauled in the grab.

The receiver managed to maintain his balance and tight rope along the sideline to breakaway for the 78-yard touchdown.

"Thought he made a real strong catch, kept his feet and was able to score the ball," Harbaugh said about Fehoko's touchdown. "He's done a great job, it was great."

Fehoko added: "This whole week we've been working that. It was a good week of practice with Stick and then Justin [Herbert] coming back. It gives us a lot of confidence as receivers to go out there and play well."

Fehoko's night was done shortly thereafter, closing out what has been an impressive summer.

The fourth-year receiver finished the preseason leading the Bolts with 170 receiving yards and a touchdown.

"I just wanted to go out there and put my best on," Fehoko said. "It was awesome to have my wife and son in the stands, just super awesome."

RB Jaret Patterson

Jaret Patterson's busy offseason came to a close in Dallas.

The running back finished the game with six rushes for 27 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and a reception for 12 yards.

Two of his six runs went for first downs, including an impressive 12-yard burst on third-and 1.

He continued to look explosive in all ways and brought some boost to the Bolts offense at times Saturday afternoon.

Patterson finished the preseason with 17 carries for 77 rushing yards and also contributed through the air with seven receptions for 44 yards.
