Chargers Come Up Short Against Rams in Preseason Play

Recap 2

The Chargers came up short in Saturday's 13-9 preseason loss to the Rams at SoFi Stadium.

The Bolts will wrap up their exhibition slate Saturday against the Cowboys in Dallas.

Here is a recap Week 2 of the preseason:

First Quarter

Josh Palmer, Denzel Perryman, JK Scott, Alohi Gilman, Rashawn Slater and Trey Pipkins III were the Chargers captains. The Rams won the toss and elected to receive. The Chargers started on defense and allowed the Rams to get on a field goal on their opening possession. Easton Stick and the Bolts offense began at their own 24 and picked up a quick first down before Kimani Vidal broke off a 13-yard run. The Bolts drive stalled at the Rams 37 but Cameron Dicker drilled a 55-yard field goal to tie the game. The Chargers defense then forced a three-and-out before Jaelen Gill returned the punt to midfield. The Bolts were on the cusp of the red zone when the first quarter came to a close.

Second Quarter

Ladd McConkey hauled in a 5-yard catch on third-and-4 to move the chains on the first play of the quarter. The Bolts moved inside the red zone but turned the ball on a fumbled snap. The Rams went for it on fourth-and-6 in Bolts territory but rookie Thomas Harper had a pass breakup to end the drive. The Bolts turned the ball over on the ensuing drive with an interception but the defense forced a quick three-and-out to get the ball back. Stick hit Simi Fehoko for 30 yards on the first play of the drive but the Bolts had to settle for a 37-yard field goal from Dicker to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.

Third Quarter

Luis Perez started at quarterback for the Bolts to begin the half and completed a 19-yard pass to Quentin Johnston on his first attempt. But the Chargers stalled out after that and were eventually forced to punt. The Rams put together a scoring drive and tied the game on a 43-yard field goal. The Bolts then turned the ball over for the third time with a fumble that the Rams recovered in Bolts territory. The Chargers forced the Rams into fourth-and-goal before Deane Leonard intercepted Stetson Bennett in the end zone for the Bolts first takeaway of the preseason.

The Bolts couldn't do anything with the turnover, however, and punted it away after a three-and-out. The Bolts forced another fourth down as the third quarter ended.

Fourth Quarter

The Rams missed a 52-yard field goal on the opening play of the quarter. The Bolts took over at their own 42 and moved the chains with a 16-yard pass to Jaylen Johnson on third-and-3. The Chargers moved into the red zone after a personal foul on the Rams but had to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Dicker. But the lead was short-lived as the Rams scored on a 47-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive. Down 13-9, the Bolts went three-and-out but the defense forced another turnover when Shaq Quarterman knocked the ball loose from Bennett and Shane Lee recovered.

The Bolts faced fourth-and-4 from Rams 21 but Perez's pass was incomplete. The Chargers used up all three timeouts in an effort to get the ball back but the Rams converted on a third-and-2 run to ice the game. The Bolts will finish up their preseason schedule Saturday in Dallas.
