The Chargers selected Clemson safety R.J. Mickens in the sixth round (No. 214 overall pick) in the 2025 NFL Draft on Saturday.
Mickens is listed at 6-foot and 199 pounds.
ESPN's Jordan Reid told Chargers.com last month that Mickens was his Day 3 sleeper at the position.
"If you're looking for a sleeper that I think could go on to be a starter is R.J. Mickens out of Clemson," Reid said. "He's guy that could play any position on the back end.
"He tested really well at the Combine, too, so he's probably a guy that'll probably go in the fifth or sixth round. I think he'll be a special teams guy but also eventually turn into a starter," Reid added.
The selection of the 23-year-old Mickens gives the Chargers more depth at safety alongside Derwin James, Jr., Elijah Molden, Alohi Gilman and Tony Jefferson.
Mickens could also make an immediate impact as a key special teams player under Ryan Ficken.
"Special teams is going to be huge. I played special teams in my career and have gotten experience on all four core units," Mickens said. "I know what it's going to take and I can't wait to contribute once I get there.
"I really love special teams. Every play counts," Mickens added.
Mickens was Honorable Mention All-ACC selection in each of the past two seasons for Clemson.
He had 75 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions and seven pass breakups this past season.
Mickens' father, Ray, played 10 seasons in the NFL as a defensive back, eight of them with the Jets.
"My dad has meant everything to me," Mickens said. "Growing up with that example was amazing, just the foundation he laid for me ... hard work and dedication really has gotten me to this point.
"I'm really just forever indebted to him. He's my role model," Mickens added.
