The Chargers and Nike recently teamed up with the San Diego Unified School District to host a flag football tournament for middle schoolers.

The tournament, which featured eight teams and included 250 boys and girls, took place at University City High School this past weekend.

Nike provided customized jerseys for each team during the tournament, which was the latest collaboration between the Bolts and the school district.

The organizations initially launched the initiative in 2023 with the Chargers providing schools with startup flag kits, helped the district purchase jerseys and hosted kickoff camps to generate participation.

The league had 35 schools participate in the first year but numbers have grown to 60 teams and more than 1,600 athletes.

Zac Emde, the Chargers Director of Football Development, said the successful tournament was an all-around effort.

"San Diego Unified approached us three years ago about launching a flag football league for their middle schools, and we couldn't have been more excited to support the establishment of this initiative," Emde said.

"It's been incredible to see the league's growth from 2023 to now, expanding to over 60 schools and involving more than 1,600 students across boys' and girls' teams," Emde continued.

"Pulling off something of this scale takes a tremendous amount of work, and the SDUSD athletics team does an exceptional job managing and amplifying their year-round sports programs," Emde added. "The families of San Diego Unified are truly fortunate to have such a passionate and dedicated group supporting their student-athletes."

The Chargers and Nike held a flag football tournament at University City High School. The tournament showcased the final four teams in both the boys' and girls' middle school flag football programs.
