Chargers Come Up Short in Road Loss to Steelers

Game Recap W3

The Chargers came up short in Sunday's 20-10 road loss in Pittsburgh.

Here is a game recap from Week 3.

First Quarter

Justin Herbert, Derwin James, Denzel Perryman, Rashawn Slater, Bud Dupree and Bradley Bozeman were the Chargers captains. The Steelers won the toss and elected to defer as the Bolts started on offense at their own 30-yard line. Both offenses went three-and-out to begin the game as each defense set an early tone. The Bolts offense was hampered by a bad snap and holding call as they went three-and-out on their second possession. Khalil Mack notched a sack on Pittsburgh's second series as the Steelers punted it away on fourth-and-18. The Bolts offense got moving on their third series as they moved into Steelers territory with a pair of first downs. The Chargers then struck first as Herbert hit a wide-open Quentin Johnston on a 27-yard TD pass to open the scoring.

Pittsburgh's offense picked up a pair of first downs and cross midfield as the first quarter came to a close with the Bolts holding a 7-0 lead.

Second Quarter

Pittsburgh tied the game at 7 early in the second quarter as Justin Fields scored on a 5-yard run. The Bolts picked up an early first down before Herbert moved the chains with completions to Johnston and McConkey. But the Chargers drive stalled inside the 10-yard line as Cameron Dicker hit a 28-yard field goal to give the Bolts a 10-7 lead with just over three minutes left before halftime. Pittsburgh faced third-and-4 at their own 36 after the 2-minute warning but Asante Samuel, Jr. notched a pass breakup to force a Pittsburgh punt. The Bolts began at their own 8-yard line with 1 minute and 50 second left with all three timeouts.

Herbert hit Simi Fehoko for 17 yards to start the drive before Will Dissly move the chains with a 7-yard catch on third-and-6. But the drive stalled as the Bolts punted it away late in the half. Pittsburgh took over at their own 14 with 44 seconds left and reached midfield. But Pittsburgh's 62-yard field goal was no good. Herbert's thrown into the end zone on the final play of the half was incomplete. The Chargers led 10-7 at the break.

Third Quarter

Pittsburgh started at its own 30-yard line to begin the half. The Steelers picked up 30 yards on a pass coupled with a personal foul on the Chargers. Pittsburgh later converted on third-and-14 to get inside the red zone but the Bolts held strong in the red zone to force a field goal that tied the game at 10. The Bolts went three-and-out on the ensuing drive as Herbert was sacked on second down to hamper the drive. Pittsburgh started at the Chargers 41-yard line but the drive lasted just one play as Bud Dupree came away with a timely interception.

But the Bolts went three-and-out on the ensuing drive as Herbert was sacked once again. The Bolts were called for two defensive personal fouls on the ensuing drive that aided Pittsburgh to get near the red zone. Tuli Tuipulotu's third-down sack was negated by another Chargers defensive penalty as Pittsburgh got a fresh set of downs. The game was tied at 10 at the end of the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter

The Chargers defense held firm in the red zone as they limited the Steelers to a field goal. Down 13-10, the Bolts took over on their own 20 with Taylor Heinicke at quarterback. Herbert was injured the previous series. Heinicke hit McConkey for 18 yards on third-and-2 to move the sticks but the Bolts drive stalled as they punted it away. Pittsburgh scored on a 55-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive as the Bolts fell behind 20-10 midway through the fourth quarter. The Chargers went three-and-out on their ensuing drive as the Steelers ran out the clock to end the game. The Bolts are now 2-1 and will face the Chiefs at home in Week 4 before their bye week.
