How Tarheeb Still & Tony Jefferson's Bond Has Sparked the Chargers Defense

W14FTP

Rookie cornerback Tarheeb Still has had quite the week after his performance in Atlanta.

And he also didn't know something else would get added to it when he walked into the defensive meeting room on Wednesday and was announced as the AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

"Coach [Jesse] Minter announced it in the defensive meeting room," Still said with a smile about when he heard the news. "All the guys were happy for me."

Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh added: "Thrilled personally, collectively. We're always happy for teammate success, the other guys success. Well deserved."

The fifth-round rookie corner recorded two interceptions, the second of which he returned 61 yards for a go-ahead score, and also had three pass breakups Sunday's Week 13 win.

Still became the first Chargers rookie to win the award since 2007, with the honor marking the first Defensive Player of the Week recognition of his career.

The award may be in his name, but the rookie was quick to deflect the credit for the award Wednesday at his locker and pointed to his teammates for allowing him to win it.

"I get the award, but I would say that's a testament to how we are as a team because everybody played a part in that," Still said. "My teammates and also the coaches doing a good job preparing me. It was a great feeling."

His monster performance against the Falcons might have been his first national recognition, but one way or another, Still has found himself around the ball a lot.

That's not a surprise to veteran safety Tony Jefferson, who had an interesting vantage point of Still even before he donned the powder blue.

Jefferson spent last year as a scouting intern with the Ravens and studied a number of players in the lead up to the draft.

One of the players he watched, of course, was the Chargers rookie.

The veteran recalled postgame what he saw from Still during his time as a scout and how he was always "around the ball."

It's held true in the NFL, as Jefferson got more into what he remembered about watching him on film.

"He was a playmaker on film, got to the ball a lot," Jefferson said Wednesday about watching Still at Maryland. "He was just around the ball.

"Those type of guys you want, those type of guys you need on the team that's just around the ball," he added.

And the term "playmaker" is not one he takes lightly, either.

He explained what makes him a "playmaker" to the truest sense of the word to him.

"'Playmaker' often gets overlooked, I think," Jefferson said. "I feel like that word gets used very loosely, but playmakers are guys who make plays out of nowhere.

"To me, that's the true definition," Jefferson added. "And Tarheeb definitely one of those guys."

Jefferson has naturally taken on a leadership role given the number of years of experience he has in the league.

That's also including with Still, as he explained how big Jefferson has been for him in his rookie year not only on the field, but off of it.

"He helps me on and off the field. It's kind of like a bigger brother," Still said about Jefferson. "He plays safety, so safety communication [with] corners goes on. He sits next to me so I'll be like, 'What's the safety do on this play? Is he going to have this route if I do this?' Stuff like that.

"He really just let's me know the little small pointers of the defense, but also just keeping me level," Still continued. "Just being there when I need him, I could talk to him about anything on the field and off the field.

Still added: "He's been a great mentor for me and I appreciate him."

Of course, a lot of Still's interactions with Jefferson came on the practice field as the veteran spent time on the practice squad.

Now on the active roster and holding a role in the safety rotation due to injuries, the two have been able to take that connection onto the field — and it showed in a big way this past Sunday.

"I knew he was excited," Still said about Jefferson. "I even felt it for him because he wanted to get back out there in live action, really hit somebody. And he showed it early, like really early in the game.

"It was just exciting for me to see him go out there, have fun and fly around," Still said. "I know he's been looking forward to that and he got the opportunity. He took advantage of it."

As much as he enjoyed being a scout and getting to watch players like Still, it's safe to say this year for Jefferson has been better for him.

"I'd rather much play, I'd say that," Jefferson said with a laugh. "Playing is much better and much more fun.

"But it's just a blessing, I give a shoutout to the Chargers organization for giving me a shot and believing in me," Jefferson added. "Now I have an opportunity to play again. Can't be mad at that."
