The Chargers have found their backup quarterback.

It's Taylor Heinicke, who served the same role for the 2024 season.

The Chargers on Thursday announced they have agreed to terms with Heinicke, who will once again be the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart behind Justin Herbert.

The Bolts traded for Heinicke last August, sending what turned out to be a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Falcons.

Heinicke ended up playing in four games last season, primarily in Pittsburgh when Herbert went out with an ankle injury. He completed three of five passes for 28 yards.

Herbert obviously remains the face of the franchise and is an unquestioned leader of the Chargers.

But Heincke ranks among the top backup options in the league, especially due to his dual-threat ability on the field. He also quickly picked up the playbook upon his arrival in Los Angeles and has starting experience.

Heinicke posted a 7-8 record and threw for nearly 3,500 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2021 with Washington. That season included four game-winning drives and three fourth-quarter comebacks.

Overall, Heinicke has started 29 games in his career and gone 13-15-1 when leading the charge.

It's never a bad idea to have a solid backup on the roster, even if you have a franchise quarterback entrenched within the organization.

Heinicke is exactly that for the Chargers.

The Los Angeles Chargers today agreed to terms with quarterback Taylor Heinicke. Heinicke has recorded 6,663 career passing yards, 39 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions. In the 2024 season, he played in 4 games.
