Why QB Taylor Heinicke is Excited to Join the Bolts

It's been a whirlwind of a couple of days for Taylor Heinicke.

After making the Falcons initial 53-man roster last week, the veteran quarterback was traded to the Chargers on Thursday.

And the newest Bolts quarterback has been on the move back and forth since then, traveling to Los Angeles, back to Atlanta to pack his things and now back in El Segundo, all in the span of a weekend.

"It's been a crazy 96 hours, but I'm excited to be here," Heinicke said on Monday at his locker. "You can't beat this weather, it's a beautiful city, so excited to be a Charger."

The 31-year-old quarterback has played in 38 career games and started 29 of them with a record of 13-15-1. He has thrown for 6,635 career yards with 39 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.

Heinicke said he wasn't surprised to be traded but is excited for the opportunity to join the quarterback room and get to know Bolts franchise quarterback Justin Herbert a little more as time goes on.

"This is my first time really meeting him and have a conversation with him," Heinicke said. "Hopefully I get to know him a little better, maybe we can go out and golf in the bye week or something and hash it out.

"He seems like a great dude, he's a great quarterback so excited to work with him," he added.

However, the 31-year-old did say that Herbert does remember him from the 2021 regular season opener when the Chargers played in Washington.

It was a game where Heinicke came in relief and it led him to start 15 games for Washington that year.

"Small world. I didn't expect Justin to know me from that game, but he does," Heinicke said. "It is kind of crazy because that's kind of the game that projected me into a better career.

"I had to play that whole season and the next season played about eight or nine games," Heinicke added. "That was kind of the start of it all."

Heinicke got his first on-field action during Monday's non-padded practice as he continues to dive into the playbook and learn the new system.

Despite not having experience in this offense, it will be something that comes with time and reps.

"That's been the most difficult part. I haven't really been in an offense like this," Heinicke said. "Like I said before, there's only so many concepts in football that you can run, it's how you call them, whether you put kills or cans or stuff like that on them.

"I dove into it this past weekend, had a lot of questions I got answered today, but I think it's going to come a lot easier with reps, seeing Justin go through it and how he does it," Heinicke added. "We had a walk-through, we had a practice [Monday] and I feel like I learned a lot. I think it's going to come with time."
