Chargers Fall to Texans in Wild Card Round of Playoffs

Game Recap Wild Card

The Chargers saw their season come to a close Saturday with a 32-12 loss to the Texans in Houston.

Here is a game recap from the Wild Card Round.

First Quarter

Justin Herbert, Derwin James, Bradley Bozeman, Khalil Mack, Rashawn Slater and Denzel Perryman were the Chargers captains. The Texans won the toss and elected to defer. The Chargers started on offense at the Houston 27-yard line. The Bolts picked up a pair of quick first downs — one on the ground and one through the air — before moving into Houston territory. Herbert connected with Tucker Fisk for 15 more yards before the Bolts were stopped on third-and-1 from the 14. Cameron Dicker gave the Bolts an early 3-0 lead with a 35-yard field goal. The Texans started at their own 30 but the drive lasted just one play as Alohi Gilman forced a fumble that was recovered by James.

The Bolts started at the Texans 33 but only managed a field goal as the drive was hampered by a sack and a dropped pass. Dicker hit a 39-yard field goal to give the Chargers a 6-0 lead. The Bolts defense kept up their hot start by forcing a quick Houston three-and-out. The Texans were called for kick catch interference on the punt as the Bolts started at the Houston 35. The Bolts picked up a first down via defensive penalty but couldn't move the sticks after that and were forced to punt. Houston hit a pair of pass plays to move into Chargers territory before Joey Bosa sacked C.J. Stroud to bring up third-and-long. Houston faced fourth-and-6 at the Bolts 41 as the quarter came to a close.

Second Quarter

Houston punted to open the quarter as the Bolts started at their own 8. Herbert hit Ladd McConkey for 12 and 15-yard gains on back-to-back plays to open the drive. But the drive stalled just short of midfield as the Chargers pinned the Texans at their own 12 after a punt. The Chargers took the ball right back as Stroud was intercepted by Deane Leonard at the Texans 40.

The Chargers then turned the ball over on the first play of the ensuing drive as Herbert was intercepted. But the Bolts defense forced a quick three-and-out as Mack helped the cause with a second-down sack on Stroud.

The Chargers started at their own 25 after a Texans punt and picked up the first third-down conversion when McConkey scampered his way for 19 yards on third-and-12. But the Bolts couldn't get another first down before J.K. Scott launched a 65-yard punt that was down at the 1-yard line. The Texans faced third-and-16 and converted on a broken play for a 34-yard gain to get into Bolts territory. Houston then hit a 37-yard gain to get down to the 12 and later scored on a 13-yard touchdown pass. Down 7-6, the Bolts started at their own 30 with two timeouts and 58 seconds left but Herbert threw incomplete on three straight passes. The Texans started at their own 32 and moved into Chargers territory as Stroud scrambled for 27 yards. The Texans it a 41-yard field goal at the end of the half as the Bolts trailed 10-6 at the break.

Third Quarter

Houston began with the ball and quickly hit a 41-yard pass play to get into Bolts territory. But the Chargers defense forced a massive takeaway as Tony Jefferson forced and recovered a fumble at the Texans 26.

The Bolts got going when Herbert hit McConkey for 17 yards that turned into more when Houston was called for a personal foul. But the Bolts couldn't convert on both third and fourth-and-2 as the Chargers turned the ball over on downs. James came up with an All-Pro play when he appeared to intercept Stroud in the end zone but the play was eventually ruled incomplete. The Chargers defense came back on the field and held Houston to a field goal as the Bolts trailed 13-6 with less than five minutes left in the third quarter. Down 13-6, the Chargers offense started at their own 29 but went three-and-out as the unit dropped to just 1-of-9 on third downs. But the Bolts defense forced a three-and-out of their own as the Chargers offense began at their own 28. Herbert threw a pick-6 on the first play of the drive as Chargers trailed 20-6 as the third quarter came to a close.

Fourth Quarter

The Chargers moved into Houston territory with back-to-back completions to McConkey but Herbert threw his third interception of the day on a pass that bounced off the hands of Will Dissly. Houston started at the Chargers 13-yard line and added to the lead with a 30-yard field goal. McConkey caught an 86-yard touchdown on the next drive but Dicker's extra point was blocked and returned for a 2-point play. Houston later added to its lead with a touchdown as the Chargers fell behind by 20 points. The Bolts season came to an end with a 32-12 loss in the Wild Card Round.
