Camp Report: Chark's TD Catch Highlights Day 3

chark2

The Chargers put in another solid day of work Friday afternoon at The Bolt, holding a 90-minute, non-padded practice in El Segundo.

The Chargers will practice Saturday at 5 p.m. before an off day on Sunday.

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Friday's practice:

1. Chark finds the end zone

The Bolts aired it out a bit Friday afternoon, and it was a newcomer who made the play of the day.

With plenty to be sorted out in the wide receiver room in the coming weeks, DJ Chark made a strong impression by hauling in a 35-yard touchdown from Easton Stick in a full-team drill.

Chark, a former Pro Bowler, made a beautiful last-second adjustment to deny a highlight play from Cam Hart as he brought the pigskin in with his fingertips.

The Stick-Chark connection was one of multiple explosive plays through the air Friday, as Justin Herbert also found Quentin Johnston for a 25-plus yard gain in a team drill.

Johnston's twisting catch kept up a strong start to camp for the Bolts second-year wide receiver.

Rookie Brenden Rice also made his best play of camp so far with a deep an over-the-shoulder catch down the left sideline for a big gain.

Herbert also displayed a strong rapport with tight end Stone Smartt in Friday's session, including a red-zone score up the seam in a 7-on-7 drill. Smartt later caught three straight passes from Herbert in a team drill.

Stick also found Simi Fehoko for a red-zone score in an 11-on-11 drill during practice.

2. Shuffling the O-line

Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater left about midway through Friday's practice. He worked with trainers off to the side and later consulted with Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh but did not return to practice.

The Bolts then shuffled their offensive line combinations in Slater's absence.

Initially, Jamaree Salyer lined up at left tackle as the rest of the line — Zion Johnson, Bradley Bozeman, Trey Pipkins III and Joe Alt — stayed in their respective spots.

Herbert promptly hit Chark for a big gain on the ensuing play.

But Salyer then took Pipkins place at right guard as Pipkins moved out to right tackle. Alt switched sides and went to left tackle, the spot he primarily played at Notre Dame.

Herbert shined again by firing a dart to undrafted rookie tight end Zach Heins for another chunk play.

The second-team line then consisted of, from left to right, Foster Sarell, Jordan McFadden, Brenden Jaimes, Brent Laing and Alex Leatherwood.

3. Situational football

Joey Bosa said after Friday's practice that he appreciates how dialed in Harbaugh and his staff are on the details.

The Bolts out that on display by working on late-game situations to close out Friday's session.

Herbert's group began at their own 40-yard line with no timeouts and 50 seconds left in the first half.

He connected with Ladd McConkey and Chark — and also picked up a few yards with his feet — to get into field goal range for Cameron Dicker, who came onto the field but only simulated the kick.

Stick's unit began on second-and-10 at the opposing 40-yard line with 18 seconds left, but a pair of incompletions thwarted the opportunity.

Max Duggan then came on for a third-and-10 scenario at the opposing 25-yard line. He fired a strike over the middle to Jaelen Gill for a first down to move the chains but eventually spiked the ball with two seconds left to set up a field goal try.

The Chargers brand new practice facility in El Segundo features a 42-foot LED video board, state-of-the-art media center, two story team meeting room and a dining area highlighted by a Chargers themed pizza oven helmed by Wolfgang Puck Catering.
