Top 23 Photos from the 2023 Season
Take a look at the best photos from the Chargers 2023 campaign through the lens of team photographer, Mike Nowak, manager of photography, Ty Nowell, seasonal photographer, Katie Albertson, and gameday photographer, Noel Vasquez

Electric Slay - This was right after Keenan Allen caught his second touchdown of the day in Week 2 vs. the Tennessee Titans. It doesn't get much better as a photographer than when the subject comes right at you and starts dancing! I actually had to lean back to keep him in frame because my lens wasn't wide enough. But it worked, as I was also able to get the big, puffy clouds in the background. Â - Ty Nowell/Los Angeles Chargers

Fire in Ice - Here's Justin Herbert celebrating a touchdown pass that gave the Bolts the lead again right before halftime in Week 3 at Minnesota. I could tell his pass to Donald Parham Jr. was like a rocket, so I stayed on him instead of tracking the ball. The look on his face and his body language says it all. - Ty Nowell/Los Angeles Chargers

Spike! - After getting their first win of the season in Week 3, the Bolts looked to do it again in Week 4 - and they did. Here's Herbert putting his emotions on display for the second-straight week after scoring on the first drive of the game against the Raiders. After keeping the ball and tumbling into the end zone, he popped up and emphatically spiked the ball. He finished the game with three total touchdowns. - Katie Albertson/Los Angeles Chargers

Scrum on the Sidelines - The Raiders-Chargers rivalry is one of the best in the NFL and it got an update in Week 4 when former Charger, Jerry Tillery, took a shot on Justin Herbert as the quarterback was out of bounds. Immediately, the rest of the Chargers team, like a family, rushed over to their QB's defense because of the trust and respect they have for No. 10. Being on the visiting team sideline gave me a great angle for this shot. - Noel Vasquez/Los Angeles Chargers

Pile Up Near the 405 - Here's Dean Marlowe stopping Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott on fourth down in Week 6. This shot really takes you onto the field to see everything that goes into the physicality of playing football. The uniform matchup in this one was already good, but because this game was in primetime, the colors looked even more vivid making it a prime matchup on the national stage. - Ty Nowell/Los Angeles Chargers

Reflection in the Red Sea - Week 7 brought about a relatively rare day-game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium between the Chargers and Chiefs. After intros, the players run to the opposite end zone to take a moment for themselves. The focus is on Keenan here, but if you look closer, you can see how personal this moment is for each individual player. Some, like Asante Samuel Jr., fully bow their heads, while others like Tuli Tuipulotu, choose to share the moment with someone close to them, in this case, assistant defensive line coach John Timu. The crisp fall day brought a vibrancy to the photos and the way the bowl swoops down behind the players framed them nicely. - Ty Nowell/Los Angeles Chargers

High Steppin' - Here's the end of Joshua Kelley's 49-yard touchdown run as he high-stepped into the end zone. I had to switch my lens as Kelley got closer but I'm glad I did. I also like how Justin Herbert is visible in the back, as he's racing down the field to congratulate his teammate. - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

Arc de Triomphe - Another primetime game - this one in Week 8 vs. the Bears - called for a unique shot and this one came courtesy of hanging a remote camera from the bolt arch during player intros. While we've hung remote cameras before, we've never had one facing the team as they make their way out through the smoke. A fisheye lens also gave me the ability to capture the fans above the tunnel, so, shoutout to section 106 for helping complete this photograph. - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

Bathed in Blue - This shot is also from the Bears game on Sunday Night Football. Since it was a night game, we added some extra light strips to give a cool effect with the smoke wall. Here's Kenneth Murray Jr. emerging from the fog getting ready to run out. Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

Party in the End Zone - When interception celebrations happen, you have a 50-50 shot of having the group come to the end zone you're shooting from. Luckily, the group ran to the one I was in after Ja'Sir Taylor recorded his first career INT on SNF. The team debuted a new Energy Stage this season and I like how visible it is off Michael Davis' left shoulder.  - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

No. 10 vs. NYJ - Welcome to Week 9 vs. the Jets. This shot is from pregame as Jets fans were given light up wristbands. Knowing that this game was at night and that they'd turn the lights off, we used prime lenses with lower apertures to create a shallow depth of field and bokeh effect with the wristband LEDs in the background and Justin Herbert up front. - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

Derwin goes UP! - Knowing this was a Monday Night Football game, we knew the Jets would pull out all the bells and whistles at MetLife Stadium - the fireworks here are indicative of that. Derwin James usually jumps like this after the national anthem, but it looks even cooler when he does it against a background like this. - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

Flash with the Pan - Derius Davis made his presence felt with an 89-yard punt return touchdown in the game vs. the Jets. To get this shot, I switched over to my panning settings, which slows the shutter from a usual 1/1600th of a second to 1/30. 1/1600 is a pretty standard shutter speed to freeze NFL action. At 1/30 you have to move the camera at the same speed as the subject to keep them in focus while the rest of the image blurs out. You run the risk of not getting any usable images when you shoot like this, but when one works out, it looks as fast as Davis was running down the field. - Ty Nowell/Los Angeles Chargers

Renaissance Man - Keenan Allen can do it all: block, catch, score. On this incredible play, he went over 10,000 receiving yards for his career. He makes this over-the-shoulder catch look almost balletic or like something you'd see in a painting. I've photographed all of Keenan's 10,000 yards, so it was awesome to witness another milestone. - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

Shrugs A Plenty - Tuli Tuipulotu had made a name for himself in Week 3, but he continued his strong rookie campaign in Week 9. To celebrate big plays, Tuipulotu honors his Tongan heritage by hitting the "T". After he hit that, here he is doing Joey Bosa's famous "Bosa Shrug" celebration with Sebastian Joseph-Day hitting the "T" in the background. A sweet moment to see the vets embrace the new kid. - Ty Nowell/Los Angeles Chargers

Get Hype - The Bolts beat the Jets 27-6 and the locker room was feeling it after the game, blaring music and dancing. Props to Tanner Muse for the assist with the speaker. These moments are cool because they're the ones the average fan doesn't get to see, so it's nice to peel back the curtain and take people "inside." - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

Hallowed Ground - Given the AFC-NFC matchup, the Chargers play at Lambeau Field every eight years, so when you're there, you make the most of visiting one of the most iconic sports venues of all time. Here's a first-person view of walking through the tunnels of Lambeau before the Week 11 game vs. the Packers. You can really feel the narrowness and also the presence of all the greats who have made this walk before. - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

10 Goes for 28 - On third down, Justin Herbert stepped up in the pocket and scrambled for 28 yards to the Packers' seven-yard line. The light in this shot is all natural, as the midday Wisconsin sun bounced off the suite windows that encircle the stadium to create this contrasted effect. - Ty Nowell/Los Angeles Chargers

DTK - The specialists are always the first ones on the field before the rest of the team, so here's Cameron Dicker warming up pregame at SoFi Stadium in Week 12 with the house lights dropped. This angle of the stadium is really cool and the shot encapsulates NFL kickers in a nutshell: under a spotlight, but not the center of attention. - Ty Nowell/Los Angeles Chargers

Rituals in the Rain - Week 13 vs. the Patriots had some of the worst weather this team had dealt with in recent years, with rain coming down the entire time. That didn't stop Cameron Dicker from partaking in his usual game rituals of wetting his hair and taking a swig of water before spraying it out like a dragon spitting fire. Here's a closeup of the latter. - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

Heart & Soul - Since joining the Chargers, Derwin James has been the emotional leader for the group. He always leads the pregame huddle by bringing everyone into the middle, raising his fist, and bringing it down. At the end of this huddle, he ended up inches away from the camera which allowed for his emotion to be on full display. Additionally, this shot is distinctly SoFi as you can see the canopy roof and infinity screen in the background. - Katie Albertson/Los Angeles Chargers

Running with A Legend - Ever wanted to run out of a tunnel with Khalil Mack? Now's your chance. This was taken on a remote camera set up inside the tunnel looking out onto the field. The shutter is set at just under one second and the long exposure mixed with the smoke gives it a vibe unlike anything a gameday usually sees. - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers

Brotherhood - Denver has one of the best visiting locker rooms in the league, allowing for full-team shots like this to be taken. Here's the whole team gathering together before heading out to start the game. It's moments like this that remind you that football is just as much of an emotional game as it is physical. - Mike Nowak/Los Angeles Chargers
