Chris Smith has worked in the equipment room for the Chargers for over 30 years. Smith was recently promoted to director, equipment operations after spending six seasons (2017-22) as the team's head equipment manager.
Smith started with the organization in 1990, working as an equipment assistant for 10 seasons before his 17 seasons as assistant equipment manager/field manager.
A Certified Athletic Equipment Manager through AEMA and a member of the Professional Football Equipment Managers Society (PFEMS), Smith came to the Chargers from his alma mater, San Diego State where he was the head student equipment manager for three years. He earned his degree in physical education and later received his teaching credential.
Smith attended Adolfo Camarillo High School where he earned two letters in football. Away from the football field, Smith is an avid hiker where he has summited two 14er peaks in California.
Smith and his wife, Joan, reside in Sunset Beach, Calif., and have two children, Zachary and Erin.
