5 Final Thoughts Ahead of Chargers-Bengals in Week 11

W11FT

The Chargers are ready for primetime with a Week 11 home game against the Bengals.

Kickoff on Sunday Night Football is at 5:20 p.m. (PT).

The Bolts are 1.5-point favorites and the over/under for Sunday's game is 47.5 points.

Here are five final thoughts ahead of Week 11:

1. Ready for the bright lights

Get your popcorn ready for this one.

The Bolts host the Bengals in primetime Sunday in what is perhaps their biggest game of the season to date.

For starters, the Bolts are looking to climb to 7-3 and notch their fourth consecutive win.

"We've got this streak going and November is just a critical month," Rashawn Slater said. "You look at every game now like it's do or die and this is no different.

"We're excited for this matchup … it's a good chance to test our mettle," Slater added. "And primetime is always fun. We'll be ready."

There's also a chance for the Bolts to further cement their playoff odds while proving themselves in front on a national audience.

"The more games we win, the more people are going to pay attention to the whole team," Khalil Mack said.

From a playoff perspective, the New York Times currently has the Bolts with an 85-percent chance to make the playoffs.

A Chargers win improves those odds to 95 percent while a loss drops them to 75 percent.

But the implications for a win against Cincinnati would be massive, as the Bolts would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Bengals while pushing them to seven losses.

"I think it's a must win for them, but honestly, I think it's a must win for us," Joey Bosa said. "This time of the year is really important to win games when you have a chance to start pulling away."

Chargers Defensive Jesse Minter said. "We know where we're at."

Put another way, it could be time to start thinking about playoff seeding if the Chargers come away victorious Sunday night.

That won't be an easy task against Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and an arsenal of skilled playmakers.

The Bolts defense has allowed 42 pass plays of 15-plus yards this season, which is tied for the eighth-fewest in the NFL.

The Bengals have 48 such explosive pass plays this season, tied for 16th in the league, but Derwin James, Jr. and the Chargers know Cincinnati can strike at any time.

"You want to be the best, you have to beat the best and they are one of the best offenses in the league," James said. "Can't wait."

Get excited for this one, Bolt Fam. The Bolts have a chance to make a statement in primetime.

"You've got to give these teams everything you've got," Mack said. "It's going to be a hell of a game.

"When the lights are bright, you've got to perform at a high level," Mack added. "They're going to give it their best shot and we've got to be ready with our best shot."

2. A pair of elite QBs

Justin Herbert and Burrow won't share the field Sunday unless it's for the coin toss or some postgame words.

But the respect between the pair of elite quarterbacks — both of whom were taken in the 2020 NFL Draft — was evident this week.

"I think he makes plays," Herbert said of Burrow. "I think he's done such a great job of playing in timing and in rhythm then being able to make those off schedule plays where that's very tough on a defense where you go through and the defense thinks they won the play and then he scrambles out and makes a play downfield.

"I think you're able to able to extend a play like that and definitely hold defenses accountable," Herbert added.

Burrow had his own praise for Herbert, calling him a "great" player with "one of the strongest arms in the league."

Burrow even joked the two might even get a chance the hang out one day.

"We got to know each other a little bit at the Combine. He's fun to be around, I liked his personality," Burrow said. "I think we'd be friends if we ever spent time together, that's not really where we're at. But I've always liked him."

On the field, Herbert will look to continue his torrid play that has him among the league's best players of late.

"I personally don't think there's many like him in this world," Chargers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman said.

And you can bet that Herbert and Burrow could likely be the difference for which team wins in primetime.

3. Tuipulotu leading pass rush

Mack said this week that his groin injury is "getting better" after he was limited to just four snaps in Week 10.

If Mack isn't at full go, the Bolts could turn to Tuli Tuipulotu to continue his recent surge.

Tuipulotu has tallied a league-best 5.5 sacks in his past three games and has spearheaded a Chargers pass rush that has gotten hot alongside him.

In Week 8, the Bolts set a single-game best with 5.0 sacks before upping that to 6.0 sacks in Week 9. Then came a 7.0-sack showing against the Titans that set a new single-game high.

"You talk about growth. He's the poster child for that word," Mack said of Tuipulotu this week. "Everything you mention to him, you see it apply to his game.

"His growth has been tremendous, not only defensively, but playing on special teams again," Mack added. "I think he has the most reps out of the whole edge room. It's truly special, man, and something you don't see from guys early in their careers."

Minter added: "He's really settled in as a rusher and I think he's always been a guy that's played the run well, been rugged, been tough, been a physical presence for us."

Overall, the Bolts are tied for fourth in team sacks with 31.0 alongside the Ravens.

Cincinnati has allowed 23 sacks this season, tied for 16th in the league.

As the Bolts look to rattle Burrow, expect the Chargers to rely on a collection of edge rushers that include Mack, Joey Bosa, Tuipulotu and Bud Dupree.

"Guys holding each other accountable, making sure we're making the right moves," Dupree said. "Each player getting better and better… We just feed off each other's energy. Interior as well, making big plays and continuing to thrive.

"Just being ready, staying ready. Being able to come here with a mindset of we have to make plays as well," Dupree added. "Whenever Joey, K-Mack need breaks, need help, we're going to be there to have their back every time."

Bosa said: "Joe, he's what makes the team run. Hopefully we're back full strength on the edge but I think we just need to have a big game."

4. The Slater-Hendrickson battle

Expect Slater to see a lot of Trey Hendrickson on Sunday night.

According to NFL Pro, Hendrickson has lined up on the Bengals right edge on 94.6 percent of his defensive snaps this season, which means a constant battle against the Bolts star left tackle.

"Relentless pass rusher," Slater said. "Strong, skilled, fast. He's got all the traits really that you would want and he just plays extremely hard."

Hendrickson currently leads the NFL with 11.0 sacks. He also has tallied 31.9 percent of Cincinnati's total pressures and 61.1 percent of its sacks this season, both the highest shares in the NFL.

The Bengals have 17.0 team sacks, with only one other player have more than one sack so far.

"Trey is definitely a hell of a player and he leads the league in sacks for a reason," Slater said. "But I think their whole group — he has the most sacks — but I think they generate pressure on other ways, too. It's a talented front for sure."

Slater has compiled a Pro Football Focus grade of 85.1 this season, good for sixth among all tackles.

"One of the great things about Rashawn is you never have to worry about him," Herbert said. "You're just going to know that the left side is good and he has it figured it out. You're at your best when you're not worried about it."

Roman added: "Excellent player … the sky is the limit for him. Dependable, reliable, accountable."

5. BE LOUD!

The first message from Harbaugh came on Monday.

"We need those fans Sunday night," Harbaugh said. "Big game at SoFi [Stadium]."

His final one was delivered at the end of the week.

"Oh yeah, hoping for a great turnout. Last week was really impressed in the Titans game," Harbaugh said. "I thought that you could really feel the crowd and the energy.

"Hopefully we play the type of football that people want to watch and get behind and support and be enthusiastic about," Harbaugh added.

Chargers players and coaches said this week that energy and buzz from the Bolt Fam contributed the recent Week 10 win over the Titans.

"Honestly, I was thinking that it was the best crowd we've ever had. That's what it felt like to me," Slater said. "I'm not sure if that's, like, verified by information or not, but I did think it was a very Chargers friendly crowd."

"Hopefully we keep winning these games and it will only get better from there," Slater added.

James said: "We felt the energy, especially on defense and third down. Hyping the crowd up … we know they're going to come out and support and we can't wait to give them a show."

Nobody is going to be surprised if Sunday night's game comes down to the fourth quarter and is decided by a touchdown or less.

A loud and boisterous crowd could be the home field advantage the Bolts need to secure a win.

"The fans are great," Bosa said. "They've been showing out a lot, so I expect it to be fun. I'm excited. Sunday night is always always a fun time."
