Defensive Tackle Damion Square is back with the Bolts after serving a four game suspension to begin the year. The Chargers were granted an exemption, so there are currently 54 players on the roster.
Square missed the first quarter of the season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. The 6-2, 293-pound Alabama product is entering his fourth season in the NFL, and third with the Chargers. He appeared in six games in 2015, totaling six tackles and one fumble recovery. Square impressed during training and the preseason before serving his suspension.
"I sincerely apologize to my teammates, coaches, the entire Chargers organization as well as the fans," he said when the suspension was first announced. "I made a mistake and take full responsibility. I look forward to returning in Week 5 and doing whatever I can do to help the team."
Missing a month gave Square a new appreciation for the game he loves. He watched each Sunday from home, muting the TV and listening to music on his couch to ensure zero distractions. Itching to return, he's thankful he can come back in time for two divisional games in a five-day span.
"That's a treat, no doubt," he said. "Because I want it. I missed (it) so much, so that's less waiting I have to do. I'll get two games really quick."
