A Conversation With: ESPN's Jeremy Fowler

Convo With JF

Chargers Training Camp is off and running ... and will be a hot ticket this summer for national NFL media members.

Chargers.com will catch up with pundits when they are in El Segundo at The Bolt.

Up next? Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Here's our 1-on-1 conversation with Fowler:

Thank you for your time, Jeremy. To start, what intrigued you the most about spending some time in El Segundo to watch the Bolts?

"I'm here to get a good look at the Chargers, get an up close and personal look at what Jim Harbaugh is doing with the culture here and sort of how they're going to move the ball on offense with Justin Herbert out for a little bit. I was watching the defense [on Sunday], pretty opportunistic with a couple of interceptions versus the Rams first-team offense. That was fun to see."

You mentioned Jim Harbaugh, just how big of a story is his NFL return around the league?

"It's a massive storyline. The guy has won everywhere he's been. We've seen it, the track record is there. I think the NFL world knew that even a year or two ago, but him winning at Michigan sort of reaffirmed things and made him pretty much the most desirable head coaching candidate that was out there this past year.

"I expect some immediate improvements as far as, it's a team that probably needed a new outlook a little bit and a new voice. They're going to get that now. He's going to bring intensity, he's always been able to control the ball on offense with a running game so I'm interested to see how that's all going to work with Justin Herbert, who's obviously immensely talented. Can they still get the most out of him while relying heavily on the running game."

Is that what what you're most interested to see play out for the Chargers this year? The offense?

"Probably. Just how they're all going to marry it. Greg Roman coming from the Ravens, always a pretty run-heavy system. Was it run heavy because that's their identity or because they had Lamar Jackson and wanted to maximize him? Probably somewhere in the middle. Now you have a drop back passer that, from a skillset, is top five in the NFL. How do you marry his ability to go down field versus staying true to what you want to do. It's really one of the bigger storyline from any offense in the NFL this year."

What about a player on the Bolts you have your eye on the most?

"I would go with Joey Bosa, he's really interesting to me. I'll go on defense. This is a guy who's been one of the most consistent pass rushers in the last decade, but hasn't had the numbers over the last four years partly because of injury. He's sort of been written off in that conversation of the best pass rushers. Can he still be really elite? I think he can. Khalil Mack put up some big numbers last year, maybe Bosa could be the one to do it this year.

"That's going to be their strength. They got Bud Dupree, they got some younger players there plus Mack and Bosa. Can they create third-down sack opportunities. Bosa is one that I'm watching for that reason. Bosa, Derwin James, some of the key guys on defense, can they sort of establish the identity that they want on that side of the ball."

Final question for you. How do you feel about the Chargers heading into 2024?

"There's still some transitioning to be done, so it's hard to put them at the top of the AFC West. I think the Wild Card spots could be wide open. This is a team that I suspect still has the talent to be in the mix of the playoffs. I'm not going to go as far as to say they're going to be one of the top in the AFC just yet because of the offensive weapons they have lost. Can Quentin Johnston be the guy who steps up? Ladd McConkey, it sounds like he's stepped up. If they have one of those guys step up and be maybe an 80 catch guy, 1,000-yard receiver, it could change my persuasion a bit."
