Here's What Jim Harbaugh Said About the Chargers at the 2025 NFL Combine

The Chargers Head Coach said Tuesday that he's consistently "attacking" the goal of winning a championship

Combine Recap 1

The 2025 NFL Scouting Combine officially kicked off in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

As prospects will continue to file in throughout the week, NFL personnel from across the league held media sessions ahead of the week.

Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh and General Manager Joe Hortiz were among them, as they made the media rounds early Tuesday morning in what's the first chapter of building towards 2025.

"Bottom line, you're after that ultimate success and that's winning the Super Bowl, the World Championship," Harbaugh said on ESPN's Unsportsmanlike Tuesday morning. "Back today on a Tuesday in February, excited to be at the NFL Combine and attacking it.

"Working on Version 2.0 for the Los Angeles Chargers," Harbaugh added.

Hortiz did hold a 15-minute podium session, as well as later meeting with Chargers beat reporters in a smaller group.

This year's Combine for the Chargers General Manager is very different from last, as this time last year Hortiz was about a month into his position for the first time in his career.

This time around however there is a more set plan in place, and Hortiz is ready for Year 2 at the helm in Indianapolis.

"I'm a lot more comfortable," Hortiz said. "It was like a whirlwind [last year]."

Hortiz later added: "Everything is coming at you fast, It's coming from all ends and all directions. This year we're in the routine, the organization, player personnel department know the routine. The coaches have been through it once already, so everyone is familiar with the process. We're in the groove now."

The Main Takeaway

Hortiz covered a lot of topics during his media sessions, but perhaps one of the bigger storylines for the Chargers this week in Indianapolis lies in a couple of veteran edge rushers.

Chargers outside linebacker Khalil Mack said after the season that he was going to mull retirement, but Hortiz said Tuesday that he's had multiple conversations with Mack's reps of late.

"I can tell you this: I know Khalil has – does he want to play another year? Khalil's got more than one year left in his body if he wants to do it," Hortiz said. "He played great in 2023, played great last year."

He later added: "I had conversations with Khalil in December and certainly after the season and we've talked with his representation and just keep on chipping away at it."

Hortiz was also asked about the status of fellow outside linebacker Joey Bosa, who has one year left on his current contract but has a sizable cap hit for 2025. He didn't rule out the possibility of Bosa simply playing at that number this upcoming season.

The Chargers GM then raved about Bosa's work ethic and impact on the field and in the locker room.

"Yeah, you can do that. Absolutely," Hortiz said.

Hortiz later added: "Not going to talk publicly about any contract stuff. On any of the players. But just know this: I love Joey and I'd love to have him."

On the other side of the ball, Hortiz also floated out the idea of guard Zion Johnson making the move to center with Bradley Bozeman slated to be a free agent on March 12.

Johnson, who is entering his fourth season, has played both guard spots in his NFL career so far.

"I think he can do it. I really do," Hortiz said. "I know he's working at it right now. And so I think Zion can do it and we got other guys you don't really know yet. They were younger, not as much opportunity, that have been working at it as well."

He later added: "We'll put our best five out there, whatever it is. Best five out there."

Tweet of the Day

The prospects in Indianapolis won't take the field until Thursday, but how about a trip down memory lane to last year's pre-draft events?

This time last year, the Chargers got their first look at wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who they would eventually trade up for in the second round.

It's safe to say the rookie lived up to expectations, setting Chargers rookie records in receptions (82) and receiving yards (1,149), a yardage total that ranked 10th overall in the NFL to go along with seven touchdowns.

And his performance at the Georgia Pro Day showed a glimpse of what was to come in the powder blue.

A Peek Ahead

The media sessions continue on Wednesday as the first group of prospects will hit the podium.

That includes defensive lineman, linebackers, punters and kickers, who will all speak to the media on Wednesday morning. The kickers and punters will then workout on the field later on Wednesday.

It'll be the first time we get to hear from top prospects like Penn State's Abdul Carter, Michigan's Mason Graham and Georgia's Mykel Williams as well as others who have been recently projected to the Chargers at No. 22 overall in Marshall's Mike Green, Texas A&M's Shemar Stewart and more.
