What Jim Harbaugh Wants to See From the Chargers This Week

The Bolts were right back to work Monday in El Segundo, with Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh offering a quick assessment of what he saw from Saturday night's game after reviewing the film.

"Quite a lot of things," Harbaugh said. "There was some good, some bad, some ugly. Now we're back attacking."

Harbaugh later added: "Excited for the opportunity this week. Got things to work on in all areas."

While Harbaugh noted the results were mixed, he detailed what exactly he is looking for in the evaluations at this point of the summer.

"It's always three things," Harbaugh said. "What you're doing [with] scheme. How you're doing it … what kind of intensity are the players playing with.

"And then who's doing it," Harbaugh added. "What, how, who … really go through it."

Putting the first preseason game behind them, Harbaugh talked about where they are at this point of camp.

With just 27 days until September 8th, things are heating up now in the buildup to the regular season opener.

And he wants his players to really feel that as the intensity goes up a notch.

"It's real, real now," Harbaugh said. "Practice, put yourself in that game mindset. Ball comes to you? Catch them all. Assignments? Laser-like focus like it's a ballgame. That ramping up of that intensity, that urgency."

How real is it now? Harbaugh explained it in a way only he can.

"This is that time. It's time to go," Harbaugh said. "It's not time to coast. This the time to pedal. Tour de France, you came out smokin' going up that hill.

"Now we have a long stretch here ahead of us, a long road to hoe, and you have to keep pedaling," Harbaugh added. "When it feels like it starts to go downhill, pedal downhill."

There's a lot of work left to be done, and Harbaugh remains wanting more from the group as the days build up — and just over two weeks until the initial 53-man roster will be unveiled on August 27.

"I always want more. I'd answer that no matter where we were at," Harbaugh said. "I want more. I want guys to want it and earn it. And that could be extra. Extra conditioning, they have to get themselves in that competitive [mindset]."

Harbaugh later added. "Who's going to make the team? The best players. How do we know who the best players are? They're going to start … they play the best."

The Bolts will hit the practice field again tomorrow at noon and Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. before an afternoon session on Thursday wraps up the preparation for the second preseason game on Saturday against the Rams at 4:05 p.m. (PT).

Wednesday's practice, however, will not be a joint practice with the Rams as originally planned.
