3 Impressive Chargers Stats Ahead of Week 7

Khalil Mack was dominant and the Chargers first-half defense continued to shine against the Broncos

The Bolts are 3-2 as they prepare for Monday night's primetime game in Arizona.

Here are three key Chargers stats ahead of Week 7

1. Khalil Mack's run defense

Khalil Mack was simply a beast against the run Sunday in Denver.

Mack forced a second-quarter fumble off running back Javonte Williams and was credited by Pro Football Focus with two run stops, which PFF registers as tackles that constitute a "failure" for the offense.

The forced fumble, by the way, was the 31st one of Mack's career. He is the only player with more than 30 since he entered the NFL in 2014.

Mack dominant play earned him a PFF run defense grade of 94.8, which was the second-highest mark of Mack's entire career.

Keep in mind that Mack has played 156 career games. He is an eight-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro, was the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and also was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame's All-Decade Team for the 2010s.

So, yeah, while Mack has had plenty of standout games, Sunday ranked among the best of his eventual Hall of Fame career.

Even at 33 years old, Mack has proven he's still one of the game's best defenders. His overall PFF grade in Week 6 was 90.5, marking the third game in a row where he was the highest-graded defensive player on the Chargers.

2. Justin Herbert steps up

Justin Herbert looked much more healthy (and mobile) in Sunday's win in Denver.

So it's no surprise that the Chargers quarterback put together his best game of the season.

If we look at traditional stats, Herbert set season highs in passing yards (237), completions (21) and pass attempts (34) on Sunday. He also threw a touchdown pass and had his fourth interception-free game of the season.

But on a more advanced level, Herbert was at his best in Week 6, too.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Herbert recorded a total EPA of 5.8 and an EPA per dropback of 0.15, both of which were season highs.

Herbert was also key on third downs in helping the Bolts convert 11 of 18 total tries on that down. His 127 passing yards on third down ranked second among all quarterbacks in Week 6 while his third-down passer rating of 118.8 was fourth.

"Just incredible what he's capable of," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday. "It hopefully reminds everyone what he's capable of."

3. Defense shining in 1st half

The Bolts defense was humming early Sunday as Elijah Molden intercepted Bo Nix on the third play of the game.

Later in the half, Mack forced the aforementioned fumble that was recovered by Teair Tart.

The pair of first-half takeaways kept up a common theme for the Chargers, who now lead the AFC in first-half takeaways with six so far this season. And that's with the Bolts only playing five games due to their bye week.

The Chargers also had a strip-sack recovery in Week 1 against the Raiders before Molden tallied an interception in Week 2 in Carolina.

The Bolts also had a pair of first-half takeaways against Kansas City in Week 4.

Denver ranks second in the AFC with five first-half takeaways while five teams have four such takeaways.

The Chargers plus-seven turnover margin is tied for third in the NFL. And the Bolts are allowing a league-low 4.2 points in the first half of games this season.
