Why ESPN Believes Chargers Rookies Will Make Biggest Impact in 2024

With the 2024 NFL Draft in the books, analysts have had some time to take a deep dive into each team's draft class.

Even now, the Chargers nine-man class continues to earn rave reviews across the league.

ESPN recently polled a panel of draft experts to see which draft class they thought had a chance to make the biggest impact in 2024.

ESPN's Aaron Schatz went with the Chargers, as he was a big fan of their draft class from top to bottom and believe they will be able to slot in and make an immediate difference.

Schatz wrote:

Joe Alt will be a force as the starting right tackle. Junior Colson will likely wear the green dot as a starting inside linebacker and will lead the team in tackles. Ladd McConkey will be featured as the slot receiver, and either Brenden Rice and/or Cornelius Johnson will get serious playing time despite waiting until the seventh round to be selected.

How soon the Chargers draft picks make their mark will be something to watch for heading into the season.

But Schatz's ESPN colleague, Mike Clay, believes that McConkey is in line for a big year as he tabbed the second-rounder as his favorite overall pick of the draft.

The two-time National Champion at Georgia scored 18 total touchdowns in 39 games at Georgia, and Clay believes McConkey can step in and be an impact player for the Bolts right away.

Clay wrote:

The Chargers moved on from Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Austin Ekeler and Gerald Everett during the offseason, a foursome responsible for 55% of the team's targets over the past two seasons. Enter McConkey, who is an excellent fit as a potential Allen replacement in the short-to-intermediate area for quarterback Justin Herbert. Even in a run-heavy offense, McConkey, who came out of Georgia, has a path to massive volume right out of the gate.
