The NFL free agency frenzy has quieted down over a week removed from the New League Year starting.

While there will certainly be more moves coming, most of the big names are off the board.

With the first free agency wave in the rearview mirror, Pro Football Focus' Mason Cameron examined each team's best move of the offseason so far.

His favorite move for the Chargers was one made before free agency even kicked off in bringing back future Hall of Famer Khalil Mack.

Cameron wrote:

Mack will be 34 years old during the 2025 season but is clearly still worth his price tag. He earned an elite 90.2 PFF overall grade in 2024, the seventh 90.0-plus mark of his career. Although retaining him meant the departure of Joey Bosa, the Chargers invested in the far more productive player.

Mack has racked up 31.0 sacks in three seasons with the Bolts, the ninth-most in the league during that span. He's also recorded 49 quarterback hits, 39 tackles for loss, 21 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

And in 2024 he put together a PFF defense grade of 90.4, the fourth-best among players at his position. He finished second on the Bolts with 6.0 sacks and led the team in quarterback pressures with 54, according to Next Gen Stats.

Bringing back Mack was another example of something the Chargers have received praise for this free agency period.

Cameron's PFF colleague Dalton Wasserman's biggest positive takeaway from the Bolts free agency so far is the amount of patience the team has taken under General Manager Joe Hortiz and Head Coach Jim Harbaugh.

Wasserman gave major props to the Chargers for sticking to the process of building out the depth of the roster while also adding in big pieces that will help an already ascending team.

Wasserman wrote:

The Chargers may have underwhelmed a bit with their free-agency haul, but their approach represents Jim Harbaugh's intent to build a sustainable winner rather than taking unnecessary risks early in the process. They still made some good signings. Keeping Khalil Mack is certainly a victory. Adding Mekhi Becton to presumably play next to Joe Alt solidifies the offensive line. The Chargers are taking a patient team-building approach to a roster that is already well ahead of the curve.
