How Derius Davis Has Given the Chargers Offense a Late-Season Spark

The explosive element of Derius Davis' game has been apparent since he stepped foot in the NFL, primarily in the return game on special teams.

But over the last few weeks, Davis has made some big splashes on offense.

Davis' strides as a weapon in the pass game has given the Chargers offense a major boost in the latter part of the season as he's hauled in the first two touchdowns of his career over the past two games.

"He's one of those guys that just has a knack being a spark, being a tone setter," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said. "When you need a spark, boom."

He later added: "There's times it just comes like a bolt of lightning."

Davis has now surpassed his rookie year total in receiving yards, notching 107 so far this season, all while continuing to rank in the top 10 of both kickoff and punt return yards.

And after heading into Week 16 with no career receiving touchdowns, the second-year wide receiver has caught one in back-to-back weeks — both of major importance in their own right.

It's safe to say it has taken him a bit by surprise.

"I did not expect coming into the season to have a receiving touchdown before I got a special teams touchdown," Davis said with a laugh.

Even if he's not on the field for a bulk of the snaps on offense, one play is all its taken for Davis to leave his mark.

Davis was on the field for 14 offensive snaps in Week 17 against New England — and one of them in particular set the tone for the afternoon.

On their second offensive drive of the game, the Bolts were looking to open the scoring after having just completed a crucial fourth down.

Davis lined up in the slot on the right side of the line, using his speed and acceleration gain separation deep on the other side of the field.

And when quarterback Justin Herbert found him, Davis made an impressive, full-extension grab as he secured the ball while going to the ground.

Chargers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman said the highlight-reel play showcased Davis' constant growth as a receiver.

"That play he caught, we've been practicing that since September," Roman said. "I had not called it, that was the first time I called it. Ladd [McConkey] had repped it maybe 15 times and he's repped it seven times, that route.

"Boom, what do you know, it gets called and touchdown," Roman added. "It's an accumulation of all his hard work, all the time he's put in, the chemistry building with Justin."

This highlight grab came a week after Davis had another stellar touchdown in the massive primetime game against the Broncos, adjusting on the fly mid-play to haul in an across his body throw Herbert.

Davis continues to showcase this ability on offense and gain the chemistry with his quarterback, something that bodes well for getting the team fired up.

"He's done such a great job stepping up," Herbert said about Davis. "We ask him to do a lot to return kicks and punts and everything he does — and at the same time, play receiver — it's a tough challenge.

"For him to be able to make some of those plays, especially the catch on Saturday, that was incredible," Herbert said. "It definitely has bought him more targets and trust and he's done a great job with his opportunities."

Roman added: "The play [against] Denver was huge, and he got us going last week too. Not only got us going on the scoreboard, but I think it got everybody just fired up for the kind of play it was. That was a hell of a play, hell of a catch."

Davis is now up to 147 yards from scrimmage on the year, as he's also provided some timely designed rushes.

When the Bolts offense gets him the ball, they know the good things he can bring.

"We just have to find ways to get him the ball," Herbert said. "Whether it's punt returns or catching it or out of the backfield, he makes people miss. He's really tough to tackle and we have to do a good job on offense of getting him the ball.

"That's when we're at our best," Herbert added, "when he's in space and making those plays."

Davis spoke earlier in the season about his continued growth as a receiver, and it's come along nicely as the season has gone on.

Now after finding some success in that department, his goal is to look for more.

"Just honing in on my craft, being intentional, getting more and more into the playbook, making sure I know what my assignment," Davis said. "Just being a better player for my teammates."

He later added: "Just how I approach each and every day, being a better teammate for my team and always being intentional. Just always wanting to do more."

Davis is looking to make a big play every time he touches the ball, just like he does in the return game, and it's shown up over the last few weeks — and he wants to continue to do so every opportunity he gets.

"I just want to be that spark," Davis said. "Every time I step on the field, I'm thinking, 'Touchdown.'

He added: "I just want to continue to be that spark for our team and continue making big plays."
