Why Sports Illustrated Predicts Jim Harbaugh to Win Coach of the Year in 2024

Buzz 06.24

Jim Harbaugh's arrival has produced plenty of buzz for the Bolts — and it's partly because the Chargers Head Coach is no stranger to quick turnarounds at every stop throughout his coaching career.

Whether it has been at the University of San Diego, Stanford or in the NFL, his teams tend to find success from the jump.

According to Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr, Harbaugh could be in line to do the same with the Chargers and might end up with some hardware along the way.

Orr recently offered his annual 100 bold predictions ahead of the 2024 season and as always, some were humorous while others some were unlikely to happen.

Still, Orr's bold prediction about Harbaugh claiming the Coach of the Year Award certainly seems possible when you look at the coach's track record.

Orr wrote:

Slightly edging out Brian Daboll's work with the stunning second-place Giants, Harbaugh will be rewarded for capping a massive turnaround for the Los Angeles Chargers and ushering in a new era of toughness and grit… Harbaugh will go 1–1 against the Chiefs in his first year, with both games ending within a field goal.

Harbaugh's lone Coach of the Year Award came after his first year in San Francisco.

After going 6-10 the year before Harbaugh's arrival, he led the team to a 13-3 regular season record and an eventual NFC Championship Game appearance.

If the head coach could lead the team to a playoff berth in his first season as Orr offered, becoming the Chargers' second Coach of the Year award winner could certainly be in the cards considering four out of the last seven winners of the award have been coaches in their first year with a new team.
