It feels as if rookie receivers Tre’ Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith keep making plays every day, whether it's in practice or in the preseason.
But it's far from a coincidence, says Chargers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman.
It's a product of the work and progress the pair of young wideouts have displayed in their first NFL training camp.
"It doesn't happen overnight, but it happens 0.1 percent point at a time," Roman said on Tuesday. "Those guys are working at it."
The pair each had their moments so far in training camp and the preseason, but it came to a head last Saturday when they combined for eight catches for 151 yards against the Rams.
They've both made leaps and gains throughout camp. But now that they've showed what they're capable of, Harris said wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal and the staff are holding them to that standard.
"Each and every game, now that we put it on tape, that's what we're going to live by," Harris said. "The tape is your resumé, so each and every game we expect to play that way."
The pair of rookie receivers both have echoed a similar sentiment of chasing improvement — and they both hope to keep doing the same as they head into their fourth and final preseason game.
Harris said he liked the speed and decisiveness in which he played with last weekend and hopes to build off of it heading into the final preseason game in Santa Clara.
"Just going out there with the same mentality I had last week. Really intense and playing it like it might be my last down," Harris said. "I want to go out there and play each and every rep like I played last game.
"I really like the way I played and just use it as another game to get ready for the regular season," Harris added.
Lambert-Smith is on a similar boat as he knows the countdown is on once the next preseason game wraps up.
"Just trying to put another good week of practice together with the guys, continue to build on the chemistry between me and the QBs in the room," Lambert-Smith said. "Just sharpening up on the details because we're getting to the backend portion of the preseason getting ready for the season to start.
"Getting all the details and getting ready to go," Lambert-Smith added.
With a little over two weeks to go before the Chargers kickoff the season in Brazil, Roman feels as if the pair of rookie receivers are on the right track.
The Chargers offensive coordinator said that it's been a build up process, like it is for every receiver, and the pair have responded well to everything in their way.
"There's nothing quite like the regular season. Right now, I think they're on schedule," Roman said. "I think they're doing a really good job of competing. Every play is not perfect right now, there's a lot of teachable moments which are what you're begging for, especially for young players. You're looking at all those moments.
"First, we're going to go through this, then once we get through that this will pop up, we'll get through that then we've got to press upon how important this is," Roman added. "There's a whole progression to it."
It's been a lot of improvement and things they've had to learn since camp started, and they know it will continue once the regular season starts rolling.
But the feeling they have is vastly different and more confident now having almost wrapped up their first NFL training camp.
"I definitely feel a lot better than when I started," Harris said. "I feel more in shape, I feel more accustomed to the game, the speed of the game. That's something I had to get used to seeing all the bullets flying.
"I definitely feel like I got accustomed to that," Harris added. "I'm super excited for the season, ready to see what the future holds."
Lambert-Smith added: "Even from last game there's areas I can improve on just watching film and trying to attack those heading into this last game before we get into the regular season. Just each game putting my best and correcting the mistakes from each game. Definitely feel confident ready to go."
And as they continue to work their way through and approach their rookie season, they are where the Bolts want them to be — which brings exciting potential to the offense.
"They're working their way through it. It's great, they've been out there working, getting the reps, getting the experience," Roman said. "It's only going to help them and us as we move forward.
"I think they're where we would like them to be," Roman added. "We're always pushing them and trying to get them to the next level."
