Troy Dye is a perfect example of the latter category.
The Chargers agreed to terms with the linebacker on a contract extension Wednesday ahead of the 2025 New League Year.
Dye signed a 1-year deal with the Bolts last offseason and blossomed into a key well-rounded piece in multiple phases.

Dye racked up a career-best 57 tackles and added 1.5 sacks with two tackles for loss.
Daiyan Henley is entrenched at one starting linebacker spot. And while 2024 third-round pick Junior Colson could fill the other spot this season, Dye's return gives the Chargers ample depth and another possible starter.
Dye was also a key special teams player in 2024 as he led the Bolts with 368 snaps in that phase.
Remember, Dye was with Chargers Special Teams Coordinator Ryan Ficken in Minnesota for two seasons before Ficken landed with the Bolts in 2022.
The duo reunited in 2024 as Dye was once again an integral piece on multiple special teams units.
Overall, Dye's return might not turn a lot of heads around the league.
But this is a smart and savvy move from Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz and the rest of the Bolts front office.
Jalen Reagor
The Chargers also agreed to terms with Jalen Reagor on a contract extension Wednesday.
Reagor provides wide receiver depth and special teams ability.
Reagor was added to the roster in late September and got some run as a depth receiver with 138 offensive snaps midway through the season.
The former first-round pick missed the final month of the season with a finger injury but ended up appearing in eight games with seven catches for 100 yards. He can also return kicks and punts if needed.
