Why Hiring Jim Harbaugh Was Chargers Best Decision of 2024

Harbaugh Buzz 01.02

2024 was quite the year for the Chargers.

And one move in particular stands out the most when looking at the last calendar year for the powder blue.

MMQB's Gilberto Manzano recently flipped through the months and ranked the best decisions by all 32 teams over the last year.

Manzano had the Bolts ranked No. 5 overall as he lauded the decision to hire Jim Harbaugh as the Chargers Head Coach.

The rest of the top five were player additions, but Harbaugh was the only hiring in the top five of his rankings, thanks in large part to what he's been able to do in Year 1.

Not only does Harbaugh have the Bolts in the playoffs, but Manzano explained why the move is a big one beyond just this season.

Manzano wrote:

The Chargers took a big swing on Harbaugh and haven't looked back. Harbaugh quickly made the team tougher on both sides of the trenches, leading to a playoff berth in Year 1 of the new regime. The team has also turned a corner when it comes to securing leads and winning one-score games. It said plenty that the Chargers were able to rally from 11 points in the second half to beat the Broncos in Week 16. These aren't the same-old Chargers thanks to Harbaugh's quick changes.

Chargers players have responded to the Head Coach from the jump, with many pointing to his and his staff's ability to build the culture in the building.

And it's turned into a playoff berth this season.

"Coach Harbaugh is an outstanding culture builder and he's really brought that here," tackle Rashawn Slater said. "There's really just been no distractions. We're really just about ball. It's pretty special."

Harbaugh has been quick to deflect the credit to his players — but it's clear he's left his mark on the team, and they're seeing the benefits in just one year.

"There's no coach who could have it better than coaching these players. Nobody," Harbaugh said with a smile after clinching a playoff spot. "Maybe the only one would be future [me]."

He later added: "This is really not a case of the coach personality rubbing off on the team, it's the team rubbing off on each other, like it would in a family. That's my view of it."
