Maye

The Chargers claimed safety Marcus Maye off waivers on Wednesday.

The Bolts also placed cornerback Eli Apple on Injured Reserve.

Here are five things to know about Maye:

1. Coming from the Dolphins

Maye joins the Bolts after starting the season in Miami.

The veteran safety signed as a free agent with the Dolphins during the offseason and played in 11 games (three starts) for them in 2024.

He racked up 30 tackles (13 solo), one tackle for loss and a pass defensed. He ranked 18th in Pro Football Focus' defense grade (70.5) among safeties with at least 250 snaps this year.

Maye was also a key on special teams for the Dolphins, playing 111 snaps in that department.

2. NFL veteran

This year is the veteran's eighth in the NFL, as the Chargers will be his fourth team.

He previously spent two seasons in New Orleans before joining Miami and also spent five seasons in New York.

Maye comes with a bevy of experience, playing in 88 games (80 starts) and totaling 439 tackles, eight interceptions, 11 passes defensed and 13 tackles for loss.

3. Former 2nd-round pick

Maye began his NFL career in New York after being selected in the second round (39th overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft as the fifth safety taken.

He spent the bulk of his career thus far with the Jets as a key piece of their secondary, starting all 60 games with the team and racking up 312 tackles (219 solo), nine tackles for loss, six interceptions and four forced fumbles.

The veteran safety played in over 1,000 defensive snaps in three of his five seasons with the team.

His best year arguably came in 2020 where he played in all 16 games and set single-season career-highs in tackles (88), tackles for loss (four), forced fumbles (two) and sacks (2.0). He also posted a career-best PFF defense grade (82.9) and coverage grade (85.8).

4. SEC safety

Maye spent his collegiate career as a member of the Florida Gators secondary.

After being redshirted his first year, Maye played in all 12 games and made two starts at safety during the 2013 season.

He spent the next number of years as a reliable member of the Gators defense.

He saved his best season for last in 2016 where he had 50 tackles, which tied for fourth on the team, one sack, one interception and six pass breakups in nine games as he earned Second Team All-SEC honors from a number of outlets.

5. Florida HS Star

Before Maye was heading the secondary with the Gators, he was a four-star prospect out of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy in Melbourne, Florida.

Maye was ranked as the No. 5 safety of his class and the No. 13 player in the state of Florida overall, according to some sites, as he played on defense and as a running back on offense.
