5 Things to Know About Chargers-Texans Wild Card Matchup

5 Things HOU

The Chargers postseason opponent is set.

After clinching the No. 5 seed with a Week 18 win in Las Vegas, the Bolts will now travel to Houston to take on the Texans in the Wild Card Round.

Here's 5 things to know about the Chargers-Texans matchup:

1. When's the game?

Shortly after their game ended, the Bolts found out a date and time for their Wild Card battle against the Texans.

The teams will meet Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (PT) from NRG Stadium. The game will be aired on CBS.

It will kickoff the Wild Card Round as the first of six games throughout the weekend.

2. Why are these teams playing?

After the Steelers lost on Saturday night, the door opened up for the Chargers to grab the No. 5 seed heading into Sunday's game against the Raiders.

The Bolts then took care of business in Las Vegas and clinched the No. 5 spot that secured them a trip to Houston and their second playoff berth in three seasons.

The Texans, meanwhile, are the No. 4 seed after winning the AFC South division once again in Week 15.

Houston is back in the playoffs for a second consecutive year after making it as the fourth seed last year as well.

It will be just the 10th all-time matchup between the two teams, but the first time they meet in the postseason.

3. What's the main storyline?

The Chargers Head Coach has led quite the turnaround in Year 1 with the Chargers, who went from a five-win team in 2023 to 11 wins in 2024.

Harbaugh, who is known for his quick turnarounds everywhere he goes, has changed just about everything in the building for the Bolts in quick time.

The players have responded to it, and it has led them to a playoff berth in his first season.

"Coach Harbaugh is an outstanding culture builder and he's really brought that here," tackle Rashawn Slater said. "There's really just been no distractions. We're really just about ball. It's pretty special."

Harbaugh is back in the playoffs after making it in his first three seasons in San Francisco.

He has a 5-3 record in the postseason, including three NFC Championship game appearances, and will now lead the Chargers into January for the first time.

4. Who's a player to watch for the Texans?

The Texans had a lot of contributors on the way to a division title, but it starts with the play of second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Stroud started all 17 games for Houston this season, throwing for 3,727 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also ran for more this season than last year, finishing with 233 yards.

The 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year winner has playoff experience in his young career as well as he played in two postseason games last season.

Stroud led the Texans to their first playoff win since 2019 after a big win against the Browns last season where he threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns.

5. What's an early 1-on-1 matchup to watch?

The Texans finished the season tied for fourth with 49.0 sacks as a team — and a big part of it was the performance from edge rusher Danielle Hunter.

In his first year in Houston, Hunter finished tied for the fifth-most sacks in the league with 12.0 to go along 17 tackles for loss and 23 quarterback hits.

It will be a big test for the Slater, who has had one of his best seasons of his pro career but did not play in the Bolts season finale.

Slater set career-best Pro Football Focus grades this season in offensive (91.1), pass-blocking (90.4) and run-blocking marks (82.8) and was selected to the Pro Bowl last week.

While Hunter and his fellow Texans pass rusher Will Anderson, Jr., did see a significant amount of action lined up against both the left and right tackle, it will be a matchup to watch when he goes 1-on-1 with Slater.
